    IMPBA or NAMBA?

Where I live we don't have 5 members to make a club under IMPBA, if you don't have a club and pond does the insurance cover you? By the web page it looks like you are only covered if you are on an IMPBA club pond.
The NAMBA page states their insurance covers you wherever you are running.
Either way I just can't see any sanctioned racing happening around here.
There are a couple of nitro based clubs in Ontario but they are a long way from where I live, like a 5 hour drive!
We do have a great location to run with permission, we can set a course a couple of different ways to take wind into account, public washrooms on site and lots of full sized boaters separated from the running area. Parking lots and easy access for launching a retrieval boat.
Back when I was actively racing nitro we did have a club here that ran in the same location.
As a few guys racing each other for fun which would be the better one to join for insurance, I'm thinking we pretty much have to go with NAMBA in our situation.
    Thanks for the info
    Cheers
If my boats upside down then who owns the one I thought I was driving the last two laps?

Sounds like you answered your own question. You may also want to look into AMA, I recall something about covering boats too.

    TG

    EDIT:

Sorry, let me explain: NAMBA will cover you on any pond assuming you follow the guidelines laid out in the rule book. You do not have to have a club to qualify either. If you want to hold a sactioned race as part of your district than I believe you are required to add event insurance through NAMBA, however this does not affect club racing which is what it sounds like you are doing.

For AMA, I throught it covered Canadians as well? Could be wrong as I don't fly.

Well that did nothing as far as clarification, and why would I join the AMA? Wouldn't do a thing for me in Canada! It's MAC up here.
Will probably just talk to my insurance agent see what he comes up with. Can't see any real benefit to joining one of the boat organizations, doesn't look like they really have much to offer anyway in our situation.
Have to see if the home owners policy will cover me.
Do the majority of you bother with joining impba or namba if you're not a serious racer?

The nice thing about NAMBA is that you're covered when your out practicing on the local pond. Provided you are following the safety guidlines of course. That's worth a lot to me.

IMPBA covers you on an approved pond.

The classes are......well....... similar. I have this recurring dream where they're exactly the same but neither organization seems to want to listen to the other.

The advantage to joining either might not be realized unless you are planning to build a club or racing in your district. All the guidlines for racing are spelled out for you. From classes to race format. All the organization part is done for you. Then if you want to attract racers from elsewhere they know that if they are already racing under organization X or Y then their stuff will fit right in if they come play with you.

Has anyone here actually had to use insurance through NAMBA or IMPBA?

NAMBA. No contest. Best insurance. Our club considered the same question and NAMBA was the winner hands down.

Interesting, I talked to my insurance agent many years ago about coverage when I run my boats, he stated my home insurance covers me up to the limits I have on my policy, racing may be another factor though?

This is the kind of info I'm looking for! Mostly some clarification of the IMPBA insurance.
We are thinking about long term as well. Gotta start small and hope we can get to the point of a "real" club.
Years ago we had a pretty good nitro scene around here. Guys got older and stopped racing and a really bad hobby shop owner finished it off!
Kinda fighting an uphill battle against that.
Go figure a hobby shop that does stock some rc stuff with an owner who actively tries to keep people out of the hobby in general. All he did was push the toy train crap!
I tried for a couple of years to buy a 1/8 hydro hull he had on the shelf, the place went under with that hull on the shelf, I could never even get a price on it out of him! Same with a hotshot 21 tunnel hull that had about a 1/4 of dust on it!
LOL be easier if there was only one body for boating, never been sure why we have two representing the smallest segment of the RC hobby with different rules!
Cheers I'll talk to the guys about each of us joining NAMBA.
I just would like to be sure people running have some kind of coverage so we don't loose our spot if something happens.

For as little as it costs for NAMBA membership, I'm not gonna risk whether my homeowners may or may not pay up. In Florida you don't dare file a claim for anything on your homeowners. They will cancel you!

Boy, you have crappy insurance companies. I just made a claim for a sewer backup water problem and it was not cheap....insurance reniewed 2 months after the claim with a penalty on my no claims deductible.

Another neat thing with NAMBA (I'm sure IMPBA has it too) is if you find a pond with a reluctant owner you can actually purchase additional protection for that owner for the pond. .

I've not had an occasion personally to use the insurance but I know it has been used. I hope I never do need it. Isn't that the nature of insurance though? Sucks to pay and never use it but sucks a LOT more to need it and not have it.

The rules for electric are close but not quite the same. IMPBA is a little behind NAMBA on the rule tranformation curve at the moment. That seems to always be the case though. One or the other is slightly behind.

I'm a NAMBA slappy so I try not to be too hard on IMPBA.
