    BEC wiring

I "THINK" I know the answer but I figure I'd better check. I have an OPTO ESC that I want to wire in an external BEC. The ESC has a series wye to double the voltage. My question is, I should wire the BEC across the ESC wye on the black (-) side of the ESC? I assume this way I am only regulating the voltage of half the series voltage which makes it easier on the BEC. Does this make sense?

You said you have a 'series wye', but I think you meant a series harness. Get a BEC that will handle the total voltage (added together) and wire the BEC in where the harness connects to the esc.

Yes, series harness but to wire across the wires at the ESC I will be cutting down 14.8 volts (4S) instead of 7.4 at the FIRST battery

Yes, and that is what you want to do. You don't want to tap into one leg of a battery (one of the batteries in your case). Choose a bec that will handle 14.8 volts.

Alright, I'll check into one that will cut down 14.8 to 5-6 volts (in my case). It just seems to be the hard way to do it. I am not sure if the unbalance on the batteries would make a difference or not.

Yes, the unbalance will bring down the total voltage and shorten your run time. Here is a suitable SBEC: http://www.hobbycity.com/hobbycity/s...dProduct=10312

Sundog, thanks for the link. I ordered 2 and a servo so I should be good to go. Thanks again.

I'm not sure why anyone bothers with external becs, why not just run a seperate 6v pack for the rx??

In my case, convenience. Less batteries to charge and or worry about. I run those Turnigy SBECs' in all my boats and have had no isues with them. For the price, you cant go wrong.

Does anyone know the difference between a UBEC and an SBEC? I thought the U was for Universal.

i think u is linear output and s is swithching but im not sure what differance it makes

Now that you mentioned that, I seem to remember a thread that talked about it but can't remember what was said. Oh well.

                              Hi guys.
UBEC stands for Ultimate Battery Eliminator Circuit.
SBEC stands for Switching Battery Eliminator Circuit.

However you will find that most UBEC's use the 'switching' technology these days anyway. Same as most ESC's with internal BEC's use the more efficient switching technology. But some still use the old linear systems. That would be the ones that say not to use the BEC if using over 3s packs.
                              Cheers.
                              Paul.
