New RC Boater needs some advice...

Being new to RC boating, I need some advice.

I currently have a Proboat Apache and what my intention was is to keep this boat mostly stock (Only thing I have upgraded is the prop, broke the plastic prop and ended up buying the proboat stainless steel prop), so if someone wants to try RC boats for the first time, I can use my Apache for this purpose.

For my 2nd RC boat, I want a offshore cat, much like my apache, so I have been looking around for hulls which have the hardware and motor installed.

Building from scratch/kit, while provides satisfaction, is not an option for me, for reasons I won't delve into in this thread.

I was looking at the Apparition Offshore Brushless RC Twin Hull , from Hobbyking, but I was wondering if there were better options out there which give more bang for the buck as it were, for about the same price.

Thanks in advance for any advice that can be offered

I think your better off spending a little more and getting a better quality product like a proboat Miss Geicko, or even the Blackjack 26. The Hobbyking models are cheaper, but in most cases have many issues right out of the box and shipping will be a premium! Maybe even the new Aquacraft Motley Crew cat coming out in April. You can get a $50/discount from towerhobbies and get it shipped to you for just under 300-bucks. Fish around here on the forum and search for info on the Apparition. Lots of guys have them, but most are just using the hulls and putting their own gear in them. Oh yeah,

I do have this hull and just like forescott mentioned I am not running the stock gear. Most of the hulls from HK can work just fine, but the electrics are pretty much useless in the hull. I am running a twin outrunner setup in that hull. $20 for motors and they work like a champ! It does take a lot more work then just a motor swap though. As a beginner your best bet would be to grab the MG or grab the new Aquacat also like forescott mentionend, I think the info he gave you was great!

I had been looking at the Miss Geico too, but the Aquacat looks just as tempting.

On the Aquacat, I was wondering if I could buy it with out the transmitter and receiver, as I have a Spektrum DX3E (Hopefully my Spektrum DX3S will be here by this Friday or Saturday) and I can just transfer the Spektrum Marine receiver from my Apache into the Aquacat.

get the geicko if this were around when i first started thats what i would get , solid electronics, great performance from what i have seen in videos and it turns at speed well , if you ever want to race it there is a class for it where you can be competitive

I don't think you can. BUT, you can sell the Tactic radio from the Aqua cat here on the swapshop and recover 50-60 bucks pretty easily. They sell fast if priced right!

Proboat sells some models as "Bind-and-drive", with the spectrum marine receivers as a cheaper option with those that have spectrum transmitters. But I don't think the Geico is offered as a bind and drive yet.

I have been looking at the Miss Geico for a while now as my next boat...seems like it comes highly recommended.

It doesn't matter if the Geico is bind n drive or not. Would be nice if it was so I can just buy the boat and use my DX3E or S (When I get it) instead of adding another proboat stock transmitter to my collection.

I use a dx3s as well. I just sold the transmitter, im sure on ebay you should get a buyer. The stock MG rx will bind directly your dx3s....

Quite fast out of the box....although if I get it, I might run it on NIMH batteries until I get used to the handling before adjusting it or upgrading the hardware and going to LiPo batteries.

Handling a boat which goes 15-20 MPH (My Apache) vs. one going 45 mph+ is a whole different story altogether.
