I would like to know as well. In sport running I use the bec and have never had a failure. In heat racing I have always used a RX pack.

I experienced both ESC smoke up and internal BEC failure, in two seperate cases, not sure one can cause the other.

In the ESC fried case I found my servos were still working; In the BEC case my motor beeps saying no signal received, while servo and receiver were quiet.

I run BEC on all my race boats 4s or less. I've heard the same thing for years but I've never heard why or how to know for sure. Never made sense to me either.

That is one reason, I never use BEC. As I also know of no reason why on 4S it should blow up, but I am always cautious
