    Epoxy/Glass cowl for JAE 21FE

I'm getting closer to finishing my P-limited Hydro (JAE 21FE), and decided to make an epoxy/glass mold and cowl for mine.
The first part should be cured later today. I built a couple of things into the mold. I molded the contour of the tub into the front of the cowl so it lays flat, and I also built a windshield outline into the mold to take the guess work out of masking the windshield.

Here is a picture of the layup curing in the mold. I have 4 plys of 1.5oz glass curing right now and will add another ply or two of 8oz cloth on top of that. I have some carbon fiber cloth as well and may make a part with it.

    Looks good Sean,

Wish I had more time to work on projects like that!

    Later,
    Mike

Thanks Mike. I know what you mean about not having enough time for projects. I have about ten things bouncing around in my head and no time to see them through. As it is, it took me 3 weeks to make the plug and mold for this... An hour here and there.

Please show us some pics when you pull it from the mold. I am building a JAE FE 21 right now, and that cowling might be great for it! Mike

            Hi Sean

Nice work. But it looks a little heavy and slow!

Be careful not to get epoxy on your wifes kitchen table!

                Keep telling yourself that.

That is my new work bench. My wife just likes to think that it is her kitchen table and keeps putting table cloths on it to absorb the epoxy.

I just pulled the first part. I'm very happy with the results. The finish and windshield outlines turned out great.

I will use 12 plys of 1.5oz cloth on the next part. I didn't enjoy working with the 8oz cloth in such a small mold.

I will trim /primer it and post a picture on the hull when I get a chance.

                    Trimmed and primered!

Also, a close up of the windshield outline.

I think you need to properly test that in Arizona!

I wish I could this year... conflicting travel schedule is preventing me from attending. It is definitely on the radar for next year though.

Besides; traveling with all those trophies and raffle prizes would be a hassle at the airport

I just found out that if the sponsons are not removable the rigger does not pack and ship. I suppose I could round up a 26" wide by 36" long box and reinforce with some stronger shipping materials and then pay big bucks for a third box. "not"

No mood to redo at this point so my rigger will not make the trip to Arizona.

Does the JAE have removable sponsons?

By the way nice glass work. Be carefull with your talents. You may get called on for glass work.

Yeah. They are removable on the JAE... in the event they break and need to be replaced. Zippkits sells alluminum split collars that clamp down on the boom tubes and prevent them from moving.

                            What glass work?

Are you going to be making and selling these?
