    esc issues

i have a super vee and upgraded to a castle barracuda 80 speed control. my set up is the ammo 2300kv motor and a x437/3 prop and 4S2P 3300 lipo's. this is the exact same setup i ran with the stock speed control. the reason i switched esc.'s because the stock speed control was obviously at it's limits. with this prop the stock speed control was at its max. amp rating. when i put the castle in the heat issue is still there and i can't figure why? i doubled the amp rating it should run alot cooler. i also know that any thing over 3 cells lipo's with this castle esc requires elimination of the bec. which i have done. with this setup i am only pushing 45 amps, but after 1 minute of running the castle gets even hotter than the stock speed control did after a full batt. discharge run. help! what is going on? :doh

How hot is the ESC running? Have you hooked it up to the castle link and put in the latest firmware and checked all the settings? Do you know how many poles the Ammo motor has, maybe the timing is off? Are you running the boat at part throttle a lot?

140-150 degrees, yes it has the latest firmware, the motor timing is set at normal, and no i do not know how many poles are on the motor. it is the one that ose sells. i only run the boat part throttle on the turns.

ESC's do not like part throttle. That is probably causing your heat problem. Also what is the temperature of your ESC? Under 130 F is OK. WOOPS sorry I did not read your reply on Temp

How do you know you are only pulling 45 amps? If the Barracuda 80 is running hot then you are most likely pulling more than that. How hot are the cells and motor? Part throttle in turns only won't overheat your ESC unless you are slowing down a lot, then accelerating. Maximum amps are pulled at low rpm and full throttle. Did you disconnect the red wire when you added the battery pack? Setting the timing at the #1 position will help, but why the Castle is running hotter than the stock ESC is puzzling.

I have seen those stock supervee escs run at a constant 60 amps peaking at 85 and not get overly hot. This graph data was with an ammo motor, SV stock esc and an X442 prop in an electrovee. He runs like this nearly every weekend, touch wood with no problems yet.

Make your own cooling. Take 2 or 3 brass tubes, cut them a bit longer than the ESC and hold them tight against the back (or where ever is handy) with some good heat shrink. Connect your flexible water lines as needed and be cool my friend
