    Piano wire driveshaft fix

    Hi,

Need some and advice on how to best secure a piano wire driveshaft lost a good one on the pond recently including the carbon prop, mine was 110 % tightly secured
with threadlocked two grubscrews and still came off just after a minute of running...

here the video link of how it happened..

any suggestions will be greatly appreciated..dont want to loose one again they are quite expensive good thing I only using carbon prop for now.

    Thanks

Did you have a flat spot on the wire where the grub screws go? That's kind of a big deal to have.

i agree, had the same problem. so i switched to a "choke down" type coupler, Octura. havent had any mishaps since.

        hi,

the piano wire is thin, I think 2 mm , did not think of putting a flat spot as it might weakened it.

I thought that too. I use the .062 size and have never had an issue since I used the flat spots. Just a couple of passes on each side is all it takes. Now if I can remember to tighten the prop nut I wouldn't lose another prop!

Lucky it was just a $8 carbon prop. Imagine if it were a $70 Andy Brown special AAHHHH!!!

Use a flat spot or the collet style coupler.

You might also want to try these in the right size or a small piece of rubber hose

As has been mentioned get a small bore silicon tube ( rc engine fuel tube) & slide on to shaft if its not quite tight enough put another piece slightly bigger on the bore size over the first piece this squeases the inner one tighter onto the shaft. Thanks Martin.

A flat spot is needed for sure. Also, does your coupler have 4 set screws? If not that can also be the problem. Tightening against the alum coupler only allows it to bore the aluminum out under pressure then she lets go.

hi, its has only has two sets screws,
I decided to put a flat spot on the other boats ,I have three driveshafts made from piano wire,I also put some small hose as i might save the shaft if come loose again,I just hope not.

Sounds like you need a new coupler...
