    1/8 scale ESC

    Hi guys,
I've been trying to get a 1/8 scale hydro running for about 2 yrs now with not very much luck.
    I've fried 3 Castle 240HVs and a Turnigy 2000.
    What am I doing wrong?
What can I use for an ESC?
    Boat Specs:
    Length: 42in
    Width: 23in
    Motor Neu 1527 1.5Y
    Batteries: ThunderPower LiPo (2) 4s 30c 5000mAh in series
    Prop: X450
    1/4 flex shaft
    Weight RTR: about 17 lbs
I'm afraid to put her back in the water. I have a few 1/10 and 1/12 hydros and have never had a problem like this. Please help.
    Thanks,
    Rich

How old is your motor? How many runs on it?

          Rich,

That's frustrating. That power should have worked. I would guess there is something not quite right with the setup. Could be too wet or too heavy or something. Hard to say without looking first hand. What hull is it?

Where abouts in MI are you? There some really knowledgable scale guys right here in District 2 that might be close enough to take a gander at it for you. You could post more pics of the boat itself if you're no where near some extra eyes.

How long before that setup puked all over? Castle has a pretty good replacement program even after I screw them up myself.

The hull is a Dick Casperi/Thunderboat Reproductions hull. The first time out I got about 3 laps before the esc smoked. Castle replaced it with a rebuit, and then again with a new unit. with those 2 she fried leaving the shore. The Turnigy popped after 1 lap.
            I live in Shelby Township.
            Thanks,
            Rich

              Rich,
1/8th scales can really load up a controller. Especially in the turns. The schultze 41.160 is my controller of choice. Expensive but very good and under rated. Not to say that is the answer, there may be more going on than that but tough to say without seeing the setup and how she is running. then again it could be a soldering issue (for ex).

What exact hull is your scale? I have had one of the Thunderboat hulls in my basement for a few years but not built.

I"m sooooo close to buying a schulze the money is burning a whole in my pocket. I'm just afraid that the same thing will happen and I'm out 6 bills.
Solder joints are nice and shiney. Really don't thing cold solder is a problem. (But I've been wrong before).
The hull is a 1990 Circus Circus.

I was going to say soldering as well.

What iron & solder do you use? Are your wires as short as possible?

What connectors are you using? are they Castle Brand or Cheap Chinese?

What programming did you use on the esc's? Timing, cutoff, etc...

I have a LRP high power soldering station.
                    Solder is .032 dia tin/lead/flux
                    Connecters are Castle 6.5
All esc's were set to default settings.

Jeese... Hmmm. Looks like you know what you're doing. Great equipment...

I need one of those nice stations....

8S1P or 8S2P on 850KV?? Thats only about 25,000 rpm. Not really a hot setup.

If it's 1P I wonder if you are lagging voltage under load and the FETs aren't turning on completely all the time.

                      Just tossing ideas out here...

Holy smoke Rich. Our home pond is in Shelby over at Ford field on 23 mile. It's a bit small for scale but we're working on that.

Alan has won more scale races than most FE guys....heck, maybe ever now that I think about it. He truly is an expert who will give you straight advice. My opinion of course.

Shoot me an email [email protected] I'll get you hooked up with Ken Joye. Maybe he'll chime in. He's local and is our resident scale ninja. Ken has held national scale titles and records for FE. I think he's got 3 scales on the bench right now.

There are a number of us building scales in the area. That's one of the classes we're hoping to nurture over the next few seasons.

If they weren't so darn big, I would build one too. Someday...

Please show us some pics of the whole interior of the boat, with all its components.
And show a pic of the bussinesend of the boat.

I am thinking that maybe since the 1527/1.5y is a 10s motor that she is running too slow thus very wet and over taxing your ESC... just spitballing here...
was she running wet kinda in the hole not really "flying" on the water? A video would help
I have ran my 1/8th with the same motor and the Phoenix 110HV on 10s and she went fine...
                              it was a 447 though.
Ken is the man, very helpful.... I believe he still holds the 2-lap 1/8 record as well....
