Down and Dirty 'outdrive' steering

What do you make of this: http://cgi.ebay.com/Racing-Fiberglas...item41566bf921. Yes, it's modeled after the boat in my avatar. I couldn't copy the pic from the ebay ad, so you'll have to click the link. The item in question is the teflon liner coming out the (stuffing tube size) hole in the transom and eliminating a universal or flex coupler (look closely at the last picture). I'm guessing the inside has a waterproofed box against the transom to keep water out. Is this just being cheap or ingenious or both?

they don't sell the out drive as a spare part, at least I could not find one. I didn't see any sign of a sealed box inside.

Man, that's one bada^^ looking boat. Be a really cool funrunner with the right gear. BTW some of the vid is from Legg Lake - I gotta seek these guys out

That does look cool. Nitrorcx does sell the parts to this, but the outdrive is $48 alone! Ouch. I do like stearable outdrives for sport boats, but that is a bit pricey for just that. guess that is why I am making my own scale drive for my 40" scarab. oh-well.

I agree that it is a really nice looking boat. Scale boats in the 24 to 30" range would be nice, but I want an old school scarab or Apache. No fountain please, old school!.

Wow, a good price for the hull, thx! There has to be some way that they sealed the teflon liner to the hull or it would leak to high heaven. Anyways, that does eliminate a u-joint and all its troubles. Just never seen that done that way before.

And did anybody catch this: When he was describing how you can adjust the strut for different water conditions, he said to angle the strut down (and he demonstrated by pushing it down) to bring the nose up. I believe he has that backwards! Maybe that's why it looked like it was cemented to the water in the first run. I would have liked to have seen his "50mph" run. Ha!

Just a little history, Graupner has done it for years like that. The Graupner Systems Cat came with hardware like that in plastic with the flex cable.

I'm sorry I dont remember. But when I do my teflon like that there is a brass stuffing tube inside the boat that ends inside the transom wall. And its sealed inside.

Yes, that makes sense - you wouldn't want the teflon tube unsupported very far. And it would need to be sealed, for sure. Thx

I had that boat once it was awful a horrible hull with rubbish hardware and electrics stay away from it !

you run it the same as a stinger or strut. There is a stuffing tube that runs almost all the way to the motor, and the teflon can ride in that. The stuffing tube supports the teflon. Many now run the cable directly in the stuffing tube without a liner, just grease it well and seal the end of the stuffing tube with water line, heatshrink or a rubber cap.

The boat looks awesome and it looks like its setup up wrong in the video, but seems to handle well. The strudder setup does look to be a pain though. I'm tempted to buy one, rebuild it, and throw a 35-56-2600 in it on 2 or 3S. Should be as fast as my old Widowmaker on 2S but handle much better since it doesnt seem to porpoise.

Can someone fill me in on the purpose of the wings though? Is it just a design thing or does it prevent the boat from flipping over in sharp turns? Ether way, the scale looks are awesome!!
