Advice on building a Boat for the Mini Shoot Out Lake of the Ozarks.

I am somewhat new to the area of R/C boats. I have had a few small gas boats in the past. Now I have a new mission, in August of this year there is a Mini Shootout at Lake of the Ozark, Your boat will go in a straight line and be clocked for top speed. There is 6 classes 3 for Vee and 3 for Cat. I am wanting to run in the unlimited class and you can have 2 motors.

I am starting from scratch and wanting to build a cat boat with 2 eletric motors and Lipos to hit the at least 80 MPH and hoping for 100 mark

What is the best boat size, electric motors and how big lipos can i go to fit in the cat boat. This is a start, but there will be many more!

I'm am new to this so be easy with me, I might have a bunch of dumb questions,

Hope I put this in the right thread!

        Hey Rusty, welcome.

You have a lofty goal, but not unattainable. Keep in mind that 36-38" might be a good target size cat - above that the cost of powering it to your speeds hits the steep part of the curve. Below that, your boat will be much more susceptible to irregularities and water conditions.

What is your budget? and what are your building skills? I am starting a build (see build thread) which may give you some ideas and if you like, a set of plans (not the best for the beginner modeler). so if you are on a budget and savy with plywood and balsa it could be an option.

Otherwise, you might want to go with a Genesis hull and some high KV outrunners. I would check with Fightercat - if he doesn't offer some comments.

Here what I'm building to run down there.

          http://forums.offshoreelectrics.com/...ad.php?t=20200

This setup on 6s should run in the mid 80's. I'm pretty sure a mono running in the 60's was topgun last year.

Here's the website from last years shootout.

          And some pics.

          And a video.

I will be there....length and power is what you need. Was thinking about a big rigger but like a cat better.

At work and to swamped to answer all the questions, but my budget is $100 if your talking to my wife and me the SKY's the limit! LOL!!!

I have built 1 airplane and put together a boat kit. I was a Ag teacher for 10 years builder gooseneck trailers with kids and I'm a killer at wood work!

I have a lake lot at the 31 MM and waiting for the econ to turn around so I can build, keep the the twin 454 29' Baja at Pier 31 and I stay at the 45 MM alot with a friend.

The Top Gun boat for the manufacturing divison last year is a friend of mine that can play with the big toys, i have to stick with the small ones!
Ron (capt ron LOTO) and I both own food joints so when I'm at one of his places we always have good stories.

can't wait to start my build and have looked MHZ C5000 pretty hard, but i also like to build things from plans with a tweak.

I think the 115 would be a better choice on the power to lenght ratio, but I'm a new guy and a sponge soaking all my info I can!

If I had an unlimited budget I would build a 135cm HPR with Lehner 3040's or 3060's, and Schulze 40.160wk esc's. I think something like that should get you to 100mph.

The Germans build cats that regularly top 100 mph, visit a few of their sites and see what they have been doing. Twin cats in the 35"-40" range running 6S to 10S get those speeds regularly. But one thing to remember - the water conditions will be what they are on race day, and they may be too rough for a smaller cat. Something in the 50"-60" range may be able to run in water that others cannot. You can win by default because you were more strategic than your competition. Or you can lose because the competition was more strategic than you. It isn't just about raw speed.

From the video the water looks a little choppy, but the fastest run last year was 60mph. I think we can give the gassers a run for there money... I think they use a radar gun for the speeds.
