    New guy: Mono vs. Cat

Last year my brother bought these little brushless boats that we had a blast with all summer. For Christmas he got my dad a King of Shaves with big motors, speed controllers, 4cell batteries and big props. Apparently he modeled it after a boat he saw on youtube that was capable of 55mph.

So ofcourse I want to build something faster. We do most of our boating at the colorado river and even the coves have a little wind chop so I'm wondering which hull would be best. I'm assuming my dad's boat will be tough to beat under ideal conditions, but maybe I can put together a boat with one big motor/esc and a couple big batteries that will handle the chop a little better. I've been looking at the R2 hulls, genesis and other boats at Hobbyking.

What do you recommend for an affordable build (preferably a single engine)?

    Thanks, Ian

    Welcome.

You want to build from stratch or want something to buy then mod for results? If you want to start fresh buy a hull from fightercat it will be better then that cat from r2hobbies. If you want something that can be pushed and handles like a dream buy a MM. A mono is gonna handle the rough water a lot better then a cat so you have to get the hull that's best for where you run the most. If it's mostly a decent bit of chop a mono maybe better. A good mono would be a cyber storm or DF33 or DF 33 copy.

The DF 33 copy, otherwise the Kintec Pursuit as Diesel stated, is a great RTR boat. It turns very sharp and runs stable. If you're not looking to build then that would be the boat for you in my opinion. I have the Pursuit, as well as Diesel, and I think we can both agree they're pretty reliable and fun boats. Plus, you can trust Jan at Kintec Racing, many here buy from him and he ships quickly and has top-notch customer service - like Steven here at OSE.

I love mine, I bought from Jan before he started selling with the leopard motors which I threw in my boat anyway except I run a bigger esc. I run a seaking 180 I think he sells with a seaking 120 esc. Turning and handling is simply amazing!

Yeah, they come with the 4074 2200kv and a SeaKing 120a ESC. I think the 120 does fine, but I might go for the 180 once summer comes around.

I like the looks of that DF33 Copy. I would prefer a boat that at least has the running gear. Is that a good motor/esc combo? Can I run a couple lippos in parallel with that set-up. Would I be better off buying it without the motor/esc and adding my own? Thanks, Ian

The leopards are AWESOME motors and the seaking esc's rock as well. I use both a lot. I like the seaking 180s though with that 2200kv motor, because that motor can pull some serious amps and I like to have a little head room. It is also a good idea to run parallel batts on that 2200kv motor as well. I run a 4s2p setup. On my leopard 4074 1774kv I use the seaking 120 and I run 4s1p.
