Difference between HV esc and normal esc?

As the title says really, I know a high voyage esc's can handle more cells but what I don't understand is how an 80a HV esc is better than say a 90a normal esc when the amps are greater on the 90 over the 80? I hope I have explained that ok. The reason I ask is because I was thinking of changing my 90a seaking in my venom p1 to the 120a as I am using the turnigy h3126 outrunner on5s in it but might consider the 80a HV if it's better.

Up to 5S you should be OK, dependant on your setup amp draw...6S and above HV.....Myself I run 6S rated ESCs at a max of 4S

Myself and others have run a 6s max rated esc on 6s with an external BEC with no problems. If it was me,Id get the 120,use an external BEC and run 5s like you want.Using the 120,you will be covered in the future if you want to upgrade the motor.

If you are using the same amount of cells in both setups a HV esc has little to no advantage over a LV version. Its only when you bump up the volts does the available power come into play. Example: 80amps x 11.1 (3S) volts= 888 watts/ 80amps x 29.6volts (8S)=2368 watts.

I was told by Castle that a HV unit will handle current surges much better than a LV. I always had an issue untill going to there HV series and now I find them indistructable with no problems at all. Who knows.

Well my trail of thought is that a little overkill is better than blowing an esc. I've only had one run with the H3126, seaking 90a esc and x640 prop so will see how it holds up when the weather warms up. If it takes the esc I think I will try the 80a HV seaking.

Castles are far from indestructable. To be safe twice of what you need is ideal if you plan to pull 60 amps u should go for a 120 amp esc. Its seems a low voltage would take more current coz it needed to produce the same power 120v X 10 amps = 10 volts X 120 amps both 1200 watts so a lv would have to pull more amps for the same power as it hv cousin.Which would have left me to believe that the lv would be designed to handle big current but I dont like catles anyway id rather buy a turnigy or seaking for the price plus the castles had issue wirth running certain motors. From the sale they got u can see castle marks junk up 100 percent or better.

I'm willing to put my money on the fact that the cheap alternative speed controls are produced for pennies on the dollar too.
