i just test ran one i put together and i am giddy. she ran great even flipped and after 5min was bone dry and running after quick inspection.all the reading on this forumn definetly paid off!! dailing this thing in was easy.she turns on a dime without losing much in the corners.which leads me to believe there is more speed in her.
mean mean machine!

Congratulations on your first build! It's very rewarding to build something yourself and see its fruition. I agree, the guys on this forum are great, knowledgeable, and very helpful - especially the technical members.
With the 9XL motor, you can definitely run 14-cell IB4200s. I bought (2) 7-packs from Steven with Deans connectors and they work like a charm and they're the least expensive NiMH packs. If you upgrade to 4S2P LiPos, you'll see your speed jump to 45mph+, but you'll have to prop down to about x442. There is a learning curve to running FE boats successfully, but it's worth doing the extra effort and research.Mean Machine Cat: 9XL, 4S2P, CC120, M545 (50mph) -- DF22 Hydro: 8L, 3S1P/4500, CC120, x637 (49mph) -- M-1 SuperCat: 1521/1Y, 6S2P, CC240, x447 (61mph) -- SV27 Mono: stock setup, 14-cell/4200, x642 (42mph) -- Micro Scat Cat: 28-3600, 3S1P/2100, Turnigy 60, x430 (41mph)Comment

10 gauge you say the 9xl can run on 14 nimh with what prop?and do you know the amp draw? i have about 20 cells for different conf.right now i can run for 3 or 4 min with motor and esc cool and batts warm.btw this is my second boat i have a blast that i run some drill motors i got from doozie. octura strut and rudder from steve at ose.runs on 10c but will prob. get lipos and different motor some day.but now i let my son drive it.i will post pictures soon my dig camera lost a battle with the floor and over the weekend my wife thought my cell phone was dirty so she washed it for me!lol.going through dt's waiting for the new one to show up.Comment

The recommended voltage range for a 9XL motor is 12-18 cells and 4S-5S LiPo. The amp draw for a Feigao 9XL motor is 74 Amps (1853 kv). If you have various cell combinations, then you could even go higher than 14-cells. However, the 0.130 flex cable is good to 12-cells. To go higher than 12-cells, you really should be using 0.150 Flex Cable set up. Just be careful with the higher voltages, especially when running LiPos. You can see my setup on this forum. I am now running with the following set ups interchangeably on the Mean Machine:
1. Feigao 8XL, 14-cell IB4200 NiMH, Hydra 120 ESC, x640 prop
2. Feigao 8XL, HXT 4S2P 15-25C 4100mAh LiPos, Hydra 120 ESC, x442 prop
3. Feigao 12XL, Neu 3S2S 30/60 C 5000mAh LiPos, Hydra 120 ESC, x537/3
Set up #1 runs 40mph. Set up #2,3 run 50mph. Hope you get a new camera for Christmas. :)Mean Machine Cat: 9XL, 4S2P, CC120, M545 (50mph) -- DF22 Hydro: 8L, 3S1P/4500, CC120, x637 (49mph) -- M-1 SuperCat: 1521/1Y, 6S2P, CC240, x447 (61mph) -- SV27 Mono: stock setup, 14-cell/4200, x642 (42mph) -- Micro Scat Cat: 28-3600, 3S1P/2100, Turnigy 60, x430 (41mph)Comment
