    Anyone running a DX3?

Hi, I just bought a used spektrum DX3 not a DX3r or DX3s just a plain old DX3 with no pictures of cars or boats on it.

I was surprised to see that the aerial on the RX isn't coax with 30.5mm of aerial on the end like my Futabas but looks like a normal 35/40MHZ aerial only shorter, at first I though the previous owner had broken the aerial but checking the online manual it says its 8" stock but you can cut it down to 3.5" with no noticeable range decrease, which doesn't sound like it is coax to me.

Has anyone used one of these radios? If so can they tell me if the aerial should be bare ended or not, also Is it any good for boats? With the uncertainty I am thinking of getting another FASST set and keeping this for cars only, or trying to sell it on as it doesn't really have enough model memories for my cars.

Keep it for cars only...the DX3S is great on boats with a marine RX...not the supplied RXs

DX3 works just fine for boats never had a problem in three years if using them. Just make sure the antenna is exposed

I've used this radio DX3 (not DX3S/R) and found it to work fine in boats and cars. I used the antenna as is (not cut) and put about 4" in the antenna tube and left the rest in the receiver box. I gave it to a friend last year and they use it in their Proboat Shockwave 36 and 55 without any problems mounting the antenna the same way I did.

Don't get things confused here we are not talking the DX3R just the older DX3

I have an older DX3.0. It works great but I have been thinking of getting the newer DX3S for more model memory.

I put my DX3 with sr3000 dsm rx to the challenge for range at our next to last Lacy race. It worked flawlessly. We were away from the water up the hill, and i was able to drive it fine. Had 2 issues when we went down on water ...

I ve got a sr300 with short antenna that Ive put in the miss madison, but the antenna is out of hull. Hope it does well...

I think a good constant power source for both tx and rx is a must.

I bought this radio for the Mono1 I was making for my cousin's Birthday/Xmas present, and posted this same post on a UK forum too, both forums gave me several people using it with success but also problems so I ended up giving him one of my FASST sets which I know will be problem free.

I had 3 FASST sets and they have enough model memories that I can get by with 2 sets but it does leave me an RX down, and FASST RX are hideous prices over here about £90 =$135 for a 603FS, so I have a question for Darin or Andy Kunz, can the DX3 be upgraded to marine spec and if so how much will it cost me? if I can get it done and with a marine RX for less than the cost of a 603FS then its a deal as a second RX for the other model memory will be much cheaper. If not I will let it go on ebay and try to find a used 603FS with the proceeds.
