need input on what class rigger to build

Ok, after messing around with my cheap china powered boats and having lots of fun, I think over the winter I want to build a rigger. One with some real power and good electronics.

Now, I do not race since there is not anythng electric locally in NE indiana, but I would like to build something that will fit into the IMPBA/NAMBA classes just so I can see how it compares to others (and incase a club starts up). No sense in starting something completely unique since I am starting with a clean slate.

My question is: what class is popular? Looking over the rules, it seems like it is split between 2s, 4s, and 6s. No limits on motor, NAMBA has limits on boat length.

NAMBA and IMPBA: N-2 would be 2s, P is 4s and Q is 6s. what the heck is O, the old 1.2 volt batteries?

I know this is going to cost some coin, but I wonder if P would be the best bet? also, are the unlimited classes popular, or is it more popular for clubs to run a specified power system on a set number of cells?

I have been runnign boats for a long time, even ran a gas rigger, but nothing as fast I think these things will end up running. Still, I can start slow and build up.

Please help point me in the right direction on the power system. Not worried about the actual boat right now, will pick that after I figure out what class I want to build it for.

    thank you, Brian

4P is the most popular size nation wide.
Jae rigger with UL 1 motor and Swordfish 120 amp controller can get you into the 60's at a very low cost.

The P-Spec (limited) class is without a doubt the most popular rigger class with the UL1 motor being the most popular motor as Jim stated. Check the rules where you want to race as some clubs and districts allow any speed controller while others specify which controllers may be used. Brian Buaas's Raptor rigger is another hull that runs great on spec power.

Well, I have a turnigy 3656 with water jacket at home, so I would be able to use that to mock up the boat. The UL-1 package would probably be great, and if it is a popular class that works out all that much better. I will have plenty of experience here to draw on!

So a rigger in the 21 size, 27 to 31" long. OSE carries the JAE21, the Etti or the rigged insanity from OSE, or the Raptor.

My problem is I like building more than running and everything is frozen right now, so I guess I have some time to decide. I will now start the process of looking up other builds and do the research. Since I do not race, for me it is more about the building, modifying and experimenting!

If you really like building boats, you could try your hand at a Keps .21.
This is a nitro build, but can easily converted to FE, I have done it twice now.
The design is very good, and the boat runs great.
The plans are on the link, as well as "build tips"
Their is also plans for other riggers on this site, all in PDF format.
