    lipo firesafe

    hi all,

just picked up a lipo storage safe at my local LOWES to safely store lipos in...eventually i will pick up another one so i will not loose all my batteries in one fire god forbid..if you care about your home family and pets then i am going to shame you into this if you have not taken the initiative to do so already...

this case was onsale for $20 and is exremely heavy duty...the case is waterproof and can withstand 1550 degrees farenheight...i am able to fit 6 6s 5000mah, and a 3s and a 4s 5000 lipo also..so a total of eight lipos in there of this size...i am going to cap the ends of the bullet connectors and rubber band the wires to each individual pack as well as put my charger into store mode...

thought you guys may have some interest
    happy holidays

Is it specifically designed to store lipos or is it a standard fire safe?

Any concerns about storing them in an airtight box?

no its not specifically designed for lipos..its a document/important items safe to avoid loosing stuff in housefires..i do not know about airtight storage but i would not think it would make any sort of difference????

There have been discussions in the past about storing lipos in airtight containters, for example, ammo boxes. The concern is if a lipo decides to burn up, the expanding gasses can cause the containter to explode.

I have read that ammo boxes are designed to keep ammo away from moisture, and are not safe containers to store primers, for example.

I've decided to store my lipos in an ammo box with the lid gasket removed so it can vent in case one does go up... I also keep the ammo box in the fireplace.

I'd love to hear other opinions on this one...

Do LiPo's require oxygen to burn???

If a bunch of LiPo's are stored so close -- one burns, then they all burn.

Mine are in the garage, in a 10 gallon, open top, metal tub, and seperated from anything combustable by 3 feet. I have 4 5000 MAH 6S packs in each corrner of the tub, so if one burns, not all will burn.

My dad used to be an British standards kite mark electrical safety tester back in the early 90s testing new products to see if they were safe for release in this country, one of the things he had to do was test for stupid mistakes people could do inadvertently including charging any batteries that came with a product whether rechargeable or not, on product arrived with lithium AA cells which were put in a standard AA charger, in their brick explosion bunker, they suspected that the cells would blow so to contain the mess they put the charger in a school type locker and put a screwdriver through the loops for the padlock clasp, switched it on and left for the night, on return they were rather surprised to find the locker without a door, the screwdriver embedded several inches into the brickwork and small shrapnel from the locker and cells pock marking the door walls and ceiling.

OK these were metal cased unvented cells which is a bad start but they were only AAs, a 4s 5Ah pack has many many times the energy and could potentially turn the whole case into a pretty decent bomb I am also be skeptical about a small vent hole, it should stop it exploding but have you ever stuck your finger over the end of a garden hose? imagine the same thing but with fire not water.

IMO MM123521's idea of a large open topped container in a safe area is best.

Here's a vid of lipos burning in a non-airtight cashbox (this is what I'm replicating with an ammo box without the lid seal).

does look relatively safe..the safe i bought is a lot stronger then this wimpy cash box..if i can find a way to keep pressure from building inside then i think it can work fine..also not store 8 of them all in one box

Aaron, can you pull the rubber gasket off that keeps the unit waterproof. That may be all you need to do. If you store the cells in several lipo sacks within the case, that may prevent all the packs from going up in flames if one lights up.

yes it has a rubber gasket which i have taken off...i think it should be okay..the safe is definately well built..you really have to think about every angle when it comes to lipos..
