pros/ cons? does anybody use them, or are they a thing of the past. seems like one could play around with ratios . or is there too much frictional loss

wow no responces, the reason I asked is I have a 5035 scorpion outrunner 500 kv and was looking to get more rpm, the torque should be there running a 10 s setup?

Lots of us have used them. For the most part they are really not needed unless you have a need like yours. Otherwise we try to buy motors that will work without gear drives. Its one less place to have to worry about and maintain.
