Use 1/4" cable, absolutely. You will eventually break a 3/16", but the 1/4" will be pretty much bullet proof.
.
Should the 1/4" cable be stepped down to a 3/16 shaft to accommodate 3/16 props or should that stay at 1/4 shaft also to run the larger 1/4 props?
? WHAT RULES?

1/4" cable with step shaft to 3/16" should be fine, will give you a greater selection of props. Most 1/4" bore props are a bit much for FE.
