LiPo + brushed 550 motor help

First things first.
Take a look at what you are running right now, the performance you are getting and were you want to end up.
Speed wise, how much do you want to increase it?
Power: When running NiMh, what is the size of the pack and how long does a full charge last? You need to figure out how much amperage you are pulling. From that, you can estimate the power the motors are consuming and putting out.
How fast are the props spinning also. If you pull a motor and have a prop tach, you can estimate the KV of the current motor.
Then you start doing math. You estimate the rpm of your motor and how fast the props are spinning. You guess at how much faster you want to spin them, then you decide what lipo you are running (you have one already). From that, you pick a new KV (rpm/volt). Once you have that, you can select a motor to match your guess at wattage.
first thing, I would try to find out what wattage you are running, that will give you a starting point. What is the amp rating of your current esc? Is there one or two? those motors on the cat were being sold with 35 amp ESC's, so you might not need a 120 amps ESC.
need some basics before you start buying big dollar parts.

Swapping out the NiMH batts with a pair of 3000 mAh 3s 11.1 volt Lipos kicks it up a notch (or two) but smokes the motors.Comment

glad you are getting the right info.... :) sounds like the 16s motors are your setup.... I always like plenty of room esc wise.... and the 120 turnigy marines don't break the bank at $49 a piece... they do make seaking 60's and 90's that are reasonable too... I like the turnigy/seaking because they are easy to set up and program.... If you get the 120's you will have plenty of headroom and you can use them down the road on alot of different projects.... good luck this sounds like its gonna be quite the setup!!Comment

I don't mind buying more ESC than I need, but how about reverse? I want the boat to have reverse.
YES!! Looks like the Turnigy has reverse. Where is a good place in the US to get them?Comment
-
As JMSCARD mentioned, the Turnigy 120a is a super value, i own several of 'em, they are simple-setup workhorses, and at $49 from Hobby king.............no brainer. Pay for the EMS shipping and have them to your door in 6-8 days max.
If you want one from the states, here is the 90a version, plenty for the 16s which correctly propped, will pull no more than 50 amps.
Pricier than HK.........free shipping though. The place is in California.

OK cool. But looking at that graph does it mean reverse won't work on 3 cell LiPos?
Sorry for all the questions, I just want to get this right.Comment
-
No sir chris that just is a graph for the different program steps... the first step you choose if you want forward or forward and reverse....next step is your LVC (low voltage cutoff) and what you want it set for.... third step and so on... you will have reverse no matter how many cells you throw at it..... get the 120 though from hk.... a 90 amp is sooooo.... in the middle and its around the same size footprint anyhow... JMHO....
if you are going to pay $67.95 for a 90 amp seaking from the states I myself would buy the swordfish 120's from steve for $69.... they are another great esc.... and you can get a program box from him as well....Comment

they work with the turnigy/seaking 180's too... they make it sooooooo easy.... and since you are getting the other stuff anyhow whats another $8.....
also since you are fairly new to this brushless thing I would definately get the program card and take one less hassle out of your life.... I hear ya as far as easy with the TX again make a wake.... but both you and I have probably pulled our hair out programming other esc's in the past so these seem simple.... ever programmed a etti? I lost a bunch of hair that day....Comment

Yeah..............they are the least frustrating ESC ever in my opinion...........
Plug and play! I tried progarmming a "suppo" once.............for a week.......thought i was in Hell..................sold it........NEED PARALLEL CONNECTORS?? QUALITY 5.5MM, 8MM, 8 AND 10 AWG, GET THEM HERE:http://forums.offshoreelectrics.com/...est!&highlight=

OK....wow hours of research to come to this decision, thanks a million to you guys.
Just ordered the Turnigy 120s and programming card from HK. Now off to OSE to order those 16s motors and cooling jackets. Yup I'm in it now!
OSE is out of the in hull water pickups, anyone know where I can order them?http://www.offshoreelectrics.com/pro...prod=ose-80400Comment
