    Weller Soldering Iron

Is a 25 watt Weller soldering pencil good enough for soldering motor/battery leads? Or should I get one with more watts. TIA

its ok for very small wires/connectors but if you plan on soldering anything like 4mm bullets or larger your gonna need something bigger. I use a 60 or 80 watt iron to solder 5.5mm bullets and larger.

Your going to need more watts. Unless you are only soldering small wires and bullets. Move up to something more like 80 watts or more. Personally I err on the side of more watts is better. You could get a 300/450 soldering gun and have all the wattage required but you would still need a smaller pencil tip iron for small soldering jobs like JST connectors or such.

Myself, I like a chisel tipped propane torch for big wire/big bullets. The job is done fast and you have no doubt the soldering is thorough. And for smaller wires/connectors I have a 25 watt pencil. There is no soldering job I cannot get done. Buy yourself some soldering flux and always have a roll of 60/40 around. Its one supply you will require thru out you RC'n day's!

I use that soldering Iron, works fine for me, but for bigger jobs I use a propane torch.

Thanks for the reply's I greatly appreciate it. I should have mentioned the I need a pencil to solder my new EC5 connectors to my esc/battery's. Any links for a good quality soldering pencil would be appreciated as well. TIA

I recently changed all my plugs to 5.5mm. I used the Weller WPS18MP. It was like $27 at Home Depot, and it worked perfectly for the job. I used a small propane torch for the heat shrink wrap.

The Weller is very comfortable to work with and heats up very quickly, it's been pretty good so far.

The 40 watt Weller with the 1/4" chisel tip is excellent, maybe even overkill for 5.5's. Runs about $18...

I use the same iron. It works well for a while, but eventually the heating element will start to fade. I've been through a couple already.
