    Hull painting

My blackjack 26 had some major hull damage. I fixed it no problem, I had some white spray paint, good brand. I sanded the area to get painted and sprayed it. It fell and the side got cracked so I had to repair that to. I then decided to paint the whole hull. I got some automotive sandable primer to fill in all the little defects. I sprayed in light coats. After it dried it started to bubble, spider cracked and peeled right up. I took some paint thinner and chipped all the bad stuff off. I got some plastic paint and sprayed and it turnned out very well. Did I do bad prep or wrong paint?

Painiting is a true art, you screwed up on your first attempt.

I followed the advice from this article and had great results on my first spray paint project.

Ive figured out that hitting it w/ an appliance epoxy first works very very well. Give it a good 320 grit scuffing. When you think its good and done, do it again. Be sure there is no gloss or hint of shine anywhere. Then hit it w/ the epoxy. Once that has cured, I usually 400 wet sand it, again, when you think its done, do it again, then pretty much anything you put on it will stick.

Paint is something that cannot be rushed. It takes time and lots and lots of patience. You will find w/ especially Krylon, humidity is your worst enemy. Keep your first few coats very light. Dont puddle every coat on as that will often cause the paint to remain soft for quite a while and you will get the cracking effect. Your last coat or two should be your only "wet" coat. Be sure to follow the manufacturers instructions on paint time/ cure etc. If you have to stop and coninue the next morning.. dont. Wait 24 hrs, then 400 wet sand it again and continue.

This is just one of several different techniques. I have painted for a number of years and have learned everything I know through trial and error. Weve all been where you are. Hi hopes and you get what you feel is a crap job. Its a learning process. Just wait till you do a fantastic paint scheme and then peel it the first time you pull your tape. Thatll make you say some choice words.

I have learned to stay with the same product line all the way through. If I'm using Duplicolor primer, for example, I use Duplicolor paint. I stick to the Acrylic Enamel. It seems to work best. Either recoat within 30 minutes or wait 4 or 5 days!

I recently discovered that ACE hardware's 'premium enamel' is the SAME as the Duplicolor at a much lower price. Works great.

Ya well I screwed it up again. I had the whole boat one color but they did not have the color paint in the brand I had. So I asked the salesman where I got the paint an he said it would work, well guess what it's a mess now. Going to start fresh do my body work done right and take my time painting it.

Do NOT do it in one night, you will have a screwed up paint job.
