    help with a new setup

Spent a few hours on the water today testing my new setup.

    Sv27
    Turnigy 2300kv motor
    Aquastar 90 amp ESC
    Grimracer 40/53 3 blade prop
    2 - 2s/2p 5400 mah lipos
    75 MHZ AM radio
    port side turn
    rudder tucked in
    stinger parallel with hull

This is the second outing for the setup. Last week a couple of us were out and I experienced some radio problems --- specifically glitching of the motor and servo. First noticed the intermittent problem while the boat was still on the stand and doing some tightening of bolts on the rudder. The servo and or motor would twitch whenever the allen wrench came in contact with the heads of the bolts. It was as though I was sevring as an antenna for some stray radio interference that was being picked up by the receiver. Did a range check and discovered a lot of issues from about 20 feet on out.

Buddy suggested we try his Spektrum 2.4 ghz which seemed to take care of the radio interference problem.

Went home that afteroon and decided to put some fresh batteries in the transmitter and did another range check in my back yard. It's pretty spacious. Everything wroked well beyond 100 feet and concluded that the problem was resolved. . . . . until this afternoon. Dropped the boat in the water and it ran fin for the first 50 feet before both servo and motor started acting eratically. Rescued the boat and did another range check. . . . with the same result as last week. Swapped radio and receiver with a spare that buddy had brought along with him with nearly identical results. Retrieved boat a second time and swapped radio for Spektrum. The boat ran well and we were able to test a couple of different prop setups and corresponding temps on motor, ESC and batteries.

Reflecting on the radio issues it appears that the failsafe is working properly on the ESC and that there is some significant interference to the lower 75 mhz band while the 2.4 ghz remainds unaffected. I am arelative newbie to FE but have some technical background and am trying to understand and or isolate the problem. Anyone encounter similar issues?

Apart from the radio issues I loved the way the boat ran.. . . and enjoyed the whole exercise of trying to establish a baseline for operating it efficiently. I don't have infintely deep pockets so I won't be trowing a lot of money ino this setup. I want respectable speed combined with reliable operation of all systems. My new-found nitro buddy suggested I consider switching to a smaller prop. We had tried one of his spare two-blade ones but ther seemed to be significantly more cavitation along with reduced speed. One thing I plan on doing is saving my pennies for an affordable 2.4 GHZ system over the winter..

What you are finding are very common problems with boats with an AM system, gltching issues are often found with water reflections and interference from exterior sources, ditch the radio and purchase a 2.4 ghz system. Price and features are what will determine the one you want.
Do not put a smaller prop on the original system, you saw the result.

If you want the least expensive solution to your problem get this:

This radio is pretty much full proof as they come and a lot of people use them. They lack the features of higher end radio's , but are solid in their performance.

        Correction re: my original post

Thanks for the reply. I guess I was mistaken about the radio. It is a 75.470 mhz which I believe is an FM radio and not AM.

It is the system that was included in the sv27. Either way, the results were the same . . . . some kind of radio frequency interference.

Until you get a 2.4ghz radio you are going to have "glitches" whether it's AM or FM. That is why eveyone(mostly) is moving to the 2.4ghz technology. The new SV's come with 2.4 I think?

I have about three years of run time on the boat you are using with my brother and and brother in law. My brother in-law finally broke down and got a 2.4 radio because he was tired of losing the signal while we were racing. I have had one glitch before and the boat took off wide open throttle and hit an oak tree. That is when I switched. I have only had a range problem once since the switch, never any other issues. Actually, they are so good, that the tactic radio I showed the link to does not even have an antenna on the reciever.

Thanks again. I guess the radio waves are pretty busy these days and that's the reason for needing more options. Like I said, love the boat . . . looking to make it more reliable.

Yeah, I am telling you when my boat hit that tree it made "thunk" sound and you just knew it was going to be bad. By the time I got over to it the entire bow was pressed inward through the boat. The radio is cheap compared to the potential damage you can have when you have glitching problems...

I actually am reparing an old beat up SV I have right now to get it ready to race again. The nice thing about those boats is if you wreck them just get a little glass and resin and you are good to go. They get ugly after awhile, but you can patch and fix them over and over.

The SV27 came with an AM system, that is the frequency of the crystal that you mention.
