Are any changes being made to Castle Creations ESC like software or timing or to the frequency when setting them up. I take them out of the box and arm mine and put them in the boat is that wrong I am not a racer.

The first thing you HAVE TO DO is to read the instructions. It doesn't matter if you are a racer or not.
1) You have to Calibrate the Hydra to your transmitter first.
2) You need to change the Cutoff Voltage if you are using LiPos.
3) If you are using a Neu "D" wind motor, set the Timing Advance to LOW. Other motors are probably okay with the default timing.
4) Read the instructions again.
