    Neu question / possible issue?

Hey guys, got a quick question here. I titled the thread neu, but I imagine this would apply to any make of brushless motor.

I've got a couple neu motors I got used from members here. One is a 1521 1.5d, and the other is a 1527 1y. I've installed bullets and tested both motors to make sure they spin, but I have a question about how the rotors feel.

The 1521 seems to offer a little more resistance when the shaft is spun by hand. Both seem to "cog" fine, assuming that is the correct term for the way the rotor stops at increments when spun by hand. It just seems the 1527 is a lot easier to spin. I was wondering if that is due to the difference in wind, or if maybe the rotor/magnet is on the way out.

Both motors were purchased from stand up members with good reps on the board, just wanted to know if maybe this 1527 will need to be sent off for some work. Neither of the two have had any run time, just hooked up and spun for a second to verify they weren't DOA.

    Thanks,
    John

I believe the D wind motors actually have a different rotor design from the Y winds. I could be wrong. But yes, there are some that cog very sharply and others that spin more smoothly. Not a problem.

It's not so much that it spins smoother, but that it is easier to spin between the cogs. As if it offers less resistance to being turned.

ya +1 I have a neu that is stiff and a tekin t8 that is smooth both are 1/8 motors

Sounding good so far! Knowing the seller, I didn't figure there were any issues, its just that my other neu's (2215 also) are harder to spin by hand.

I believe Neu changed to a slighlty skewed stator lamination stack in the newer motors, hence the lower cogging torque. I have both old and new designs and they work fine either way. There are differences in the nitty gritty details, but these make little differences in our uses.

Have you ever tried spinning an Aquacraft SV27 motor by hand on just the shaft? Not a chance on any day ending in 'Y'. They really cog.
              Cheers.

Good deal guys. I know they vary, as I have some other brand brushless motors that are easy to spin. However, I have 4 different neus (1509,1521,1527, and 2215) and the 1527 is the only one that is really easy to spin. Just wanted to make sure it was in good health.

Tyler is correct. The newer "less cogging-by-hand" skewed stator motors may be identified by small strain reliefs where the wires exit the motor .

Guys, any idea when Neu started changing that up? I believe the birth date on the 1527 may be some time in 2008.

I had two 1515 1Y's at Neu for repairs in June 2009. Alex Heckman in the repair department wrote to me 6/22/09 (on this issue) : " Some of the newer stators have a skew in the laminations that help with cogging. The rotors are the same as far as I know". I have an older 1521 1.5D that doesn't have this feature and it runs fine.

Thanks Tony. I believe I'll just run it and see how it does, if I find something to put it in. I had it bolted up in my cyber storm, but think I'm gonna put the 1520 I ordered from castle in its place.
