So I just bought this esc used and it came in and one of the caps is pushed in a little and one of the motor connection posts has a good burn in her.... should i be hesitant of these issues... I am going to put this in my 54" mhz and want it to be A OK!

Jason if that was mine I would send it to Shultze to have it checked out, cap(s) replaced, additional caps added, and the connector(s) replaced.

i wanted to run my MHZ tommorrow!! thanks tho doug... I am using it in a twin 2215 mhz... with x457's... on 8s2p... was hoping it was gonna get wet... If I send it to schulze it won't be back til the ponds freeze over up here in Vermont... this was gonna make my mhz totally whole and I waited forever to get it.... really upset now... but thank you for your honesty... I've had an expensive enough year with the magic smoke....

The control was back in my hands in three weeks. Do you have that long?lol
The control may be fine it's the what if,???? that bothers me.
Rummy has a point too but the old 40.160 are hard to find and I'm not convinced at this pont that the newer controls are as good. Again JMO.
Good luck!!

From what I can see its just dented.... looks like the cap is still "sealed"..... I really don't have that long... fall is upon us... I have 16 matching lipos for this project just sitting here... the boat I have had to look at for about 10 weeks now... I am dying to see this go... so you are saying these V16 may be better then the newer ones? I know the new ones have data logging.... I bought it from a reputable member... but don't know if he had ever actually used it....Comment

I don't have any personal experience with the newer controls (without the copper plate). I based my opinion on my experience with the older controls, what I have read, and what I've heard from others.
The cap does just look dented. Will that in itself cause a problem? I don't know. It could have been pooched and the user pushed it back in?
You do have to wonder what happend to the connector though. Battery lead got away from the user??, motor lead disconnected while it was running???, ect. Either one of those may have caused a problem that is waiting to disappoint you.
Perhaps the seller can shed some light on this for you.

Depending on the loading that the esc will endure that dented cap may fail. Because its about how hot the caps could get. The "K" looking scribe on the ends of the cap are there to allow the cap to vent if heat causes the cap to swell. Its basicly a burst disk. It didnt appear wet or oily from the picture. So its probably good. The burned metal bullet on the FET board wouldnt stop me from running. Just make sure you take cotton swab soaked in alcohol and clean the female bullets out.
Icare used to carry the replacement Schulze caps for the 40.160 but that was years ago. Not sure now. Thats if you wanted to attempt to replace the one.

Thanks gents... I haven't heard from the person who sold it to me but hes away right now... he is a well regarded guy though and I know he would make it right.. but I do want to run this thing.. and no there is no oily residiue and from what I can see the cap "seam" looks ok... thanks for the idea to clean the female inputs... should I cut back the "covering" on the cap and make sure the cap "seam" isn't split open anywhere as I can't totally see all the top of the cap... as the ends have shrink wrap slightly covering them...
I myself wouldn't attempt replacing the cap... If i was to do it I would send it to schulze but that won't get me out on the water... I may just try it.... I hope all goes well.... the esc will be pushed a little... its going in a 54" mhz with twin 2215 1.5y's with x457 L&R props... on 8s1p 5000mah 40c batts per side.... only for quick runs of course on 5000mah... 2 mins... the carbon battery trays are only big enough to hold two 4s 5000's on each side so I am gonna try 1p for now....
Also My Brand New V16 schulze has its battery wires "fused" together... this esc has two seperate positive and two serperate negative battert wires... should I fuse these together on the used one too if I do decide to try it??Attached FilesLast edited by JMSCARD; 09-25-2010, 03:31 PM.Comment

Better safe than sorry, send it in or get a refund, the two best options. Your third option could go worst case if you try to use it, and you dont want to think about that.Comment
