Look at this circuit...Where is the path if the FET's are turned off?
Anyways, this got off topic sort of....The OP wants to know why his caps keep blowing. It could be a few things. Do you have any pics of the inside of your boat?

This has been interesting reading.Since my son couldn't get another turnigy 180 at that time he switched the motor out for a lepord 4074 2000kv and bought a turnigy 240 and all was good. But I know lots of guys are useing the 180 with out any problems.
Like I said its making for some good reading on these cold winter days.

      Thanks Jack

I used to be engineer on tugboats on the great lakes and the atlantic and pacific oceans.
One time I was on a 4000 horsepower twin engine boat.
The starter on the port engine (a big, geared, air motor) failed.
We needed to start this engine in order to operate the boat, so we started the starboard engine, as usual. then we would run as fast as we could on the starboard engine and dump the clutch on the port engine to start it. The port engine always started up just fine, using its "wind milling" prop.

Do you know how much torque it requires to start a 10,000 cubic inch, 2000 horsepower diesel engine? All that torque came from the windmilling port propellor and we were only going about 9 miles per hour when we dumped the clutch.

Here is Castle's response about the "generator" effect being discussed above. Reference is from Castle's section at RC Monster.

"The braking is regenerative because it has to be -- can't dump that much energy anywhere but back into the battery. (The battery is used as a load, but using a battery as a load mean charging the battery...)

          It is not, however, optimized.

Still gets fairly good efficiency up to about 35% braking power -- above that the conversion efficiency gets lower."

I have added caps to my Turnigy 180 to reduce the temps and works fine (until now). I couldn't find exactlythe same (Rybycon 35V 1000uf ZLH) but I found the Rubycon 35V 1800 uf ZL which are also for high ripple current and small resistance.
Bent the + caps wires together and soldered them and then soldered to a wire and then soldered to the + wire of the esc. Same fror the -. Glued with ca the extra caps to the existing ones. Then everything sealed with liquid tape.

I would run a 9XL ; in fact I often ran one in the 31" H&M that George now has and it was fast & ran a long time on 4S2P.

Just re-did my Vegas with a 180, added an Etti cap bank, like most of my high perf rigs. Or you can get Rubicon caps [ 1500 uF, 25V] from Newark Electronics for $5.67 for ten. ( I just did).
Properchopper I am going to use the way you hooked up the ETTI caps. Looks like you just stripped the battery leads and soldered them to the board is there anything else I need to know thanks chris

Just one more point. Have a look at your packs and battery leads, as well as the connectors.

Poor packs(higher IR, lower capacity), long/thin battery leads both add up the stress the capacitors must handle. Im not saying cheap packs, Turnigy packs can easily outperform earlier FP packs though the prices may be 5 times apart.

                    I have been using a sealing 180A
In two of my boats for two years and heard a small pop when I brought it in on the first boat and the second boat started to run on half power
I checked the capacitors and one on each board was bad
Where can I buy the mother board and stock caps

You can remove the cap and use an external cap board. But first I would figure out why this has happened. Going to half power means the lvc kicked in. If you run for much longer the caps are overworked and then pop. This can also damage the esc.

Hi Steven been a while, thanks for getting back so quick
I have been running my boat hard and a lot of on throttle and off bad day
What external cap board would you recommend
                        Thanks Gary

Cap banks should be added as close to the ESC as reasonably possible.
