    Paint Choices

OK I've got my new PT Stealth Sport to the point where it's time to paint. My question is which type of rattle can paint do you guys feel is better for this type of hull. Krylon, Automotive type paint (Dupli-color or similar), or Hobby type (testors or similar). Also what type of clear coat should I use with each type if it is needed.
Thanks for your input, I hate painting and am nervous about screwing it up.

Are you going to use the spray cans or a spray gun on it and did you get it yet?

Rattle cans. It is supposed to be done Monday. Phil had to repair one of his race boats after a crash

I used a coat of Krylon primer to check for any spots I missed. Can I go over it with an automotive paint or do I need to remove it first and reprime?

I would shoot Krylon paint over the Krylon primer for best bond between paints. This is by far the easiest way to go.

I once had to do a spot repair using Krylon primer under Automotive paint. I found that Automotive paint would not bond verywell to the Krylon primer. Hatch tape will pull automotive paint right off the Krylon primer. Allways use the matching automotive primer with automotive paint(matching brand).

Autozone sells a cheap Duplicolor Acrylic Laquer system that should work verywell. Be sure to purchase the matching primer also. You can spray this primer over the Kylon primer without stripping of old primer

I made a deal with my brother-in-law to paint the boat. He wants to spray gun it with auto paint. Should I or can I recoat the auto primer right over the Krylon primer if I use an enamel auto paint? Sorry for all the questions but I'm definitely NOT a painter.

Yes you can. Be sure to sand Krylon primer coat well before shooting another type primer over it.

There are two different lines of the Duplicolor paints...one is lacquer, the other is enamel. Be SURE to use the right associated primer. I don't like the lacquer because it's very brittle and chips really easy. The enamel doesn't come in very many colors.

I have good luck with Krylon. Follow the directions closely regarding recoating! If you paint too soon after the primer, it can wrinkle on you. The same is true if you wait too long! It's tricky. Read the cans carefully.

I would strip the hull and use the primer recommended by the jobber for that paint - better safe than sorry.

On the button Chuck, he mangles props and is not too shabby at painting either, also his stuffing skills are now well known

You could spray krylon color then have it Urethane clearcoated with urethane automotive clear
