Hatch Tape vs 3M electrical tape

It could sit foverever in the water and not take on any. And even stranger, the boat can be upside down in the water for like 10 minutes and not take on water. It's only when I drving fast it takes on about half a cup of water in like 5 min. This is a hydroplane so the hull is hardly in contact with the water.Comment

Well! the hated moron is back with no FE knowledge.
Humour is a jewel ....ignorance is??
The problem you state makes no sense after all you have done, did you pressure test the hull with all components totally submerged?

Then you may want to check your seams or any other place that has structural contact the the tub. It could be at speed it's forcing separation that's allowing water in (ie: screw holes, joints etc.).
Also when doing the underwater test you don't need to pump air into the hull. It will most likely show a leak at the tape seams. Just hold it under and look for bubbles. If all of your wishes are granted, many of your dreams will be destroyed!Comment

Electric tape is fine as long as you dont blow over at speed. Then it rips off very easily. Hockey tape will stick better on blow overs. I also like denatured alcohol to keep the taped surface clean. Electric motor spray works good for this as well.

Okay, I tried sucking the air out of the tub when it's under water and it starts to fill up, but when I stop the water stops. Only problem is I can't see where it's coming from because the area is under the motor mount and there is no way for me to see under there let only seal something up. Any ideas?Comment

That's where I get mine. I use to use the "duck" brand that's in the auto section. I use the "GE" brand that you can find in the electrical sept now as it's a few cent more for 26 more feet. When you apply it dont strecth it out. After a few hatches blown off with "Hockey Tape" it didn't hurt to try electrical tape. I've not had a blown off hatch yet. Knocking on wood. Try it if it works stick with it. Hockey tape that is.If all of your wishes are granted, many of your dreams will be destroyed!Comment

Hatch Tape
Dan, You might know that I have some rolls of the 3M #5 electrical tape for sale. We love it and I order a case for club use and have a few extras. I am a Nitro, Gas and now electric boater. I have been boating for 15 or more years. The 3M tape is the best. It will not leave residue when left on the boat hatch for many weeks. My experience with the Renfro Hockey Puck Tape, it that it works good but will leave a sticky mess on your boat.
You might also want to do a pressure test on your sealed hatch or box area by blowing through the antenea stalk. You might also want to take your thumbnail and press the tape into the crack of the box lid and the box or hatch area.
Good luck and feel free to ask, where as you can have a water proof hatch or radio box.

This topic isn't to debate which tape does or doesn't leave residue. I just wanted to know if 3m was the best at keeping out water. Now that I have found the problem I would appreciate some advice on how to fix it. When I say "pump air into" that's what I mean. I take a bike pump and I can pump 40psi into the hull before the hatch blows off. The only bubbles I see are from the corners of the hatch where the tape over laps. But water is still getting in from somewhere else. It's like there's a friggin one way valve in there! lol Water gets in, but air does come out!? And I can't pin point where the water is coming in.Comment

Douggie,
I'm not sure if you noticed, but Steven deleted the contents of your post (#33), for exactly what you did in post #57. You may wanna edit it. No need to get an infraction or banned for something insignificant, like disagreeing with someone about what to use for hatch tape.Catching Air!Comment
