ESCs: Back-EMF Question on Logic Circuits

OK, can someone explain the way different ESC manufacturers approach back-EMF logic circuits for non-sensored ESCs and their correlation with 2-pole, 4-pole, and 6-pole brushless motors? Is it really achieved through logic gates in conjunction with the phase?

It's probably simple, but I'm trying to understand for myself.

    Thanks!

There is no simple "covers all esc" explanation for design of back emf circuits for our speed controllers. The complexity of each is dependent upon age of design (newer speedos have better engineering design logic) and quality of software too as more powerful small micro processors come around.

To get a basic understanding try reading this, http://cache.freescale.com/files/product/doc/AN1914.pdf Its well written, references some basic engineering and does not get "too far out there" for non double "E's". Also it might enlighten you to multi pole motors and how an esc see's the differences thru just software.

I will say though, this topic is one that you should not tackle at the end of the day.

        John,

Thanks for the link and info. This is making sense. So if I read right, there's no difference in the way the ESC sees 2, 4, 6 or higher pole counts, only in their ability to handle the timing efficiently. Is that right?
