new here with a few ?s please

hi there in new here been lurking around for a few weeks. I am very new to the electric boats but not new to rc boats. iv been running gas boats along time and have moved and are only smaller ponds and the owners don't like the loud gas boats so I'm wanting to do a cheap build to see if ill like the electric stuff first.

I'm thinking of getting a used ul-1 hull and hardware. and i have a traxxas Velineon Extreme brushless set up just collecting dust. has any one ever tried this set up in a boat? how will it work? or how do you guys think it will work? the esc is waterproof so that a plus and the motor is 10-turn 3500kV.

here is a newbie ? on motor is lower kv mean more power? like will a 2600kv be faster than say a 3500kv one? i don't under stand how to rate the motors so any info and help on that be great.

Lower kv will mean more torque/less rpm. Higher kv will mean less torque/more rpm. Typically you want to find a motor/battery combo that will get you into the 30,000rpm range. Too much more will create too much heat and start to burn up your components. The stock ul-1 comes with a 2030kv motor and is designed to run on 4s lipo. (4s lipo=14.8volts) 14.8 volts x 2030kv=30,044rpm. Right where you wanna be! These limits can be pushed a little and you can get away with slightly larger motors and still maintain some reliability, but a 3500kv motor on 4s is too much. On the other hand, If you were to run the traxxas setup on 3s you would see 38000rpm. Still too high, but with a smaller than stock prop you might get away with it. Whatever you decide to do, be sure to start with short runs and bring it back in to check the component temperatures often.

And get a water jacket for that motor to help keep the heat down.

thanks for the tips. if i go with build i planed on water cooling the motor for sure. and was plan on running a single 3s lipo since that what it was desined to run on

The Delta Force Vortex Hydro would be a good hull to run the power package you have. Although I would start out with 2s then move on to 3s if you are not happy with results.

That is a fantastic brushless system. I've had them in my cars and they run top notch. I've never had one in a boat though. I would definitely be worried about heating up the controller. Not to say it wouldn't work, just watch the temps. Definitely try it on 2S first.

I have however tried the smaller Velineon system on a reef racer, believe it or not. It is absolutely ridiculous(we play tag with these). Very fun stuff. However, the controller frequently overheats....even on only 2S. I'm in the process of designing an aluminum cooler for it.

I would definitely consider some form of cooling for the controller before you even run it. Just my experience.
