    1/16th scale hydro test

I tested the 1/16th scale Hydroplane today. The results were actually better than I had hoped for.

Here are the two setups I tested on the same boat.
The boat is a Gary Finlay designed shovelnose just under 23.5 inches long

    Ammo 28-45-3600
Straight shaft with a dog bone type u joint (u joint wont be used in future boats probably a wiredrive or flex shaft)
Octura X 431r aluminum cleaned up and sharpened only
    Hacker Navy 70 ESC

Trinity Speed Gems 12 turn car motor
Straight shaft with a dog bone type u joint (u joint wont be used in future boats probably a wiredrive or flex shaft)
    RC-Hydros 60 amp 6-12 cell controller
Octura X 431r aluminum cleaned up and sharpened only

    Batteries tested were

    PolyRC 20 2S 2500 mah lipo's ( 1 pack)
GP 3300 6 cell pack (not a good comparison would be way better comparison using IB or EP 4200's

I started with the brushless setup and the 6 cell sub c's. It would get right up on a plane and prop walk with speeds probably between 30 and 35 just what I was going after and temps were not above 90 degrees after 10 to 12 laps in the small pond.

Same setup but with the PolyRC 2s 20C 2500 mah battery yielded similar temperatures after 8 to 10 laps and speeds that were easily between 35 and 40 and looked and ran great.

I didn't try the sub c's with the trinity 12 turn but the lipo's with the 12 turn was noticeably faster by another 3 to 5 mph and temps about 125 but I am sure I could bring those down by changing out the driveline for a wiredrive and that would drop the temps and get rid of the u joint.

I could see being able to run two complete heats without recharging the poly rc's as after one run of 10 laps the voltage was still 7.4 volts. The battery temps with the brushless Ammo were 85 degrees and 105 with the trinity brushed motor.

Hmmm... Interesting Jim... What direction are you turning???

I may have to pull the Finlay hull I did up as the '82 Obero down and get it ready to go again... If you guys were going to turn to the right... I could have it ready to go in about 20-minutes...

Let us know what you guys decide to run... I last ran it on a 12-turn Revolution V2, RC-Hydros 90A ESC, and 6-cell pack... Went pretty good...

It would be awesome on Lipos...

I have the same hydro and still in the process of building it. I just have to install everything. How important is it to offset the driveline for propwalk? Could you offset it using rudder trim?

        Thanks

This one is dead center. It did not want to take real tight turns at full speed rolled over three times so maybe offsetting it may help.

That figures... Is there actually a "we" yet??

Well... I suppose I could reverse-rotate the motor...

And... If I recall correctly... I made my hull so the turn fin could be mounted on either side, so I may be able to make it work... especially since I didn't offset the drivetrain or anything... I'll take a look and see if it'll work... What are the turn-fin limitations??

I guess you are basically limited to a single prop... X430... Unless there is something in carbon that exists, or someone else makes smallish 1/8th sized right hand rotation props...

Would this be "scale" enough to qualify?? It's about 23" long if I recall... (about 3% longer than the plans were originally... due to a copying error at Kinkos...)... I tried to get it as "scale" as possible using Garry's plans...

I was considering selling it to fund other projects, since it's only been on the water once since I built it, but maybe.... :D

It will be talked about Darin but to start out we will probably just do shovel nose boats and it will end up being very spec maybe even a min weight limit same motor maybe same battery, stock prop ect. We just want to keep this as even as possible, Scale, inexpensive and most of all fun. We may even make arrangements to do laser cut kits for the members so everything is similar.
