My current project is a dumas lil rascal. Its a 22" long rigger and it was meant for gas but I'd like to make it an FE sport boat. What kind of motor should I be looking for? Hoping to run it on 2s. Would a 380 be enough or would a 540 class motor do it? http://www.dumasestore.com/catalog/p...roducts_id=407
motor selection for small rigger

A buddy of mine uses a 380 in a 22" scratch build rigger. I beleive he runs a 6l on 2s with a x430. The 380 cans are easier to fit in the narrow tub. I have an 380 8l in the swap shop. I used to use it in a 17.5" hydro and she was decently fast with cool temps. If all of your wishes are granted, many of your dreams will be destroyed! -
For a 22"tub rigger I would suggest a 540-S motor, a 380-XL should do the job as well and it may depend on what you have and how much room you have.
A long can 380 with a good water jacket will take up as much vertical room as a 540 short with jacket.
I have a 22"tub rigger with a 540-7S 5000kv Fiegao motor running 2S. The pack is a Turnigy 5000 mAh 30C to a 100 mystery esc and runs a octura x632 prop.
I have once run this as a 3S setup with a 432 prop and that was not the most clever thing I have done.
My thoughts for a 22" tub rigger are to run a 1/8" shaft and set the motor to provide 30krpm minimum and then use a 432 and maybe a 632. I am still tyrying to get hold of a higher pitch low dia prop.

The Dumas Lil' Rascal is a heavy boat, I'd suggest a 540 rather than a 380 motor. It will run faster and cooler with the larger prop a 540 can turn. An 8S Feigao turning an x438 should work well. I'm afraid that a 32mm prop may be too small for best performance.
