    DF Cyberstorm 33 setup

Hey guys, I picked up a used DF storm 33 from a member here. Already has hardware, but needs Motor / ESC. I have the 1521 neu that was in it, but am thinking I may run that in a hydro. Would like to setup the storm for sport boating / playing around at the beach. So basically I'm only looking for 35ish - 40 mph tops.

Would a 12xl be an acceptable motor for my goals here? It would be spinning the already installed .187 flex cable. Not sure if the bigger cable puts a lot more load on the motor?

Also, what ESC should I go with? Swordfish 120 too small? Should I jump up to something like that etti 150? Remember, for sport / play purposes, I'm aiming for a budget build here.

BTW, I want to run this boat on 4s.

    Thanks,
    John

I was under the impression that was a little high on the kv rating for this hull (from what I found searching). Would the leopard, with a smaller prop, be better than the xl? Trying to keep this one a budget build.

I think you will find many many people that have used the nue 1515 1y which is 2200kv and they swear by it and the castle neu and the leapard are both 2200kv

2200kv is perfect for 4s and the leapard 4074 at $90 is a no brainer if your on a budget

Thanks bud. Any starting prop suggestions?

Anyone else got any other ideas to add? The only reason I suggested the 12xl is because the xl's seem to be time tested. Didn't see any other budget motors Steve offered that seem so widely used with success.

I should probably add, I'm trying to give Steven some business here, so browsing his selection is what I've been doing.

A 580 8L (1600 rpm) series motor might be a better choice for the sport boating you desire.

Thanks Douggie. I had considered that, but then after searching it seemed like everyone's 580s were blowing up. Kinda makes me hesitant to pull the trigger on one.

Don't be afraid of the 580l's. I did have one that the laminations came undone from the motor though. Steven will tell you that the return rate of these are comparable to the 540's. I have compared an 580 7l to a Neu 1521 1.5d. Almost the same speed and amp draw. The 580 does run about 10 degrees hotter but was still under 120 in Hawaii humidity.

IME 2200 is a little high for a 33" mono.

Thanks for the info. My thoughts were the same on the 2200kv. Just seems higher than what I need for playing around. I'm more concerned about running cool and longer run times.

1500-1600kv like Douggie suggested was more what I was originally thinking.

Running 4s, a 10 xl would work good with the 120 amp esc. You will probably see 40 to low 40's with the right prop and good runtime with 2p. The 2200kv motors are more for a race setup and can pull a lot of amps if setup incorrectly. Plus runtime will be down.

Thanks RD, that is kind of what I was thinking. The goal here is cool temps, good run times, and reliability before speed. A "bashing" boat. I don't wanna be stressing the speed control with big amp draw for a little extra speed.

I agree with this totally... I use 10xl's in a few boats... very good sport motors on 4s..... though I have a df33 with a 1521... what a ROCKET! :) but the 10xl will do all you want it to do and will keep amps down... I think the 120amp esc will be on the edge with the leopard but will be perfect for the 10xl... and you will be able to prop up... I use a 10xl in my titan with a X447... temps at 105 on motor and 45mph speed! I also use two 10xl's on my supercat twin 34".... twin x447's again cool... good run times, great all around motors... and if you wanna go crazy for fun you can toss a few more volts at them for speed runs with smaller props too cause they are a 1668kv... :)

Thanks guys. I was hoping to hear that. The 580 sounds good, but so many people seem to have success with the xl motors its hard to not go that route. All my 580 searching reveals issues as the common outcome.

                              i ran a 13XL on 6s etti 150 race and a X645 that worked like a charm.
there is a video of it in the video section as well.
