Maybe consider removing all gap and see how well it behaves? I run as little gap as possible and try for zero amount. Since the thrust bearings job is to take loading in the direction that the radial bearings should never see it would make sense from a functional standpoint to have as little, if any, gap as possible. Any gap will allow side loading of the roller bearings. They are designed for minimal or no side loading. This leads to premature wear.

First set was setup with no gap. I just let the coupler slide down the motor shaft and tightened it. After it went bad I saw some were leaving a minimal gap so I went that way with this one. At least the way it was the first time I got around two dozen runs with it. This one lasted one and a half. The motor and coupler also was machined flat due to a little gouging that the first one did. I'll just try a different brand and see.
