Im contemplating an eagle tree setup.

The basic unit only records voltage and amperage only? Can I run the same boat with different props and maintain the records of each run seperate or is it all 1 file? Basically what I need to know is can I buy just 1 unit, take it to the pond and run it in multiple boats w/multiple props then retrieve the data when at home?

Besides the base unit and the GPS add on, is there any others I should buy also? I dont know whats useful to have and whats not.

A great investment and one I recommend. The V3 logger is the best for FE applications in my opinion. You are correct that you need additional sensors to monitor/record other parameters. I would recommend the brushless motor sensor, one or two temp sensors (you can have up to 3) and probably their new GPS module. I would get the High current version also for just a few more dollars. (I have the acceleration sensor, A/D converter, etc but they are for specific monitoring projects outside FE boating)

Yes, you can log and keep all the data as I do. I store it on my laptop. The software allows you to set up files for each model you have. I keep the data logs for each it it's own "boat specific" file and add the data on props, batteries, etc.

Another later investment for you may be their LCD data display screen This way you do not have to take your laptop to the pond to read data after the run....it is displayed on the LCD panel.

Well thats just it, I dont have a laptop. I dont want to buy a laptop to take to the pond either.

I was hoping theres a way I can use this same system on all my boats without having to come home and unload the data. Also I need it to be easy to move between models. I have three boats as of now... 4 more in the works...

So whatever it is I need to make it easy to remove and setup in the other boats.

Im most interested in the amps, volts and GPS/speed. Other stuff would be beneficial also I suppose.

The V3 logger and all other Eagle Tree units have a limited built-in storage capacity. The amount of data you can store depends on your sample rate (from 1 per second or so up to 10 per second...so a low sample rate requires 1/10the storage) and the number of parameters you are storing. GPS takes a lot. You would have to do the math on what you want to accomplish. They may have a data storage expansion capability so I would recommend checking directly with Eagle Tree on this.

Just for your info, I sample virtually everything at the highest data rate and a 4 minute run will use half the memory capacity of the Eagle Tree. For this reason I download after every run....a luxury you do not have without a laptop. Hopefully Eagle Tree can assist you with a recommendation for a data storage expansion capability.

I use the pro it has more memory and yes you can view each session as a whole or separate them out by themselves . I usually view them at the pond and can easily get a days worth of racing on the recorder and view them when I get home. I use the brushelss sensor, 140 amp sensor, thermocouple with 2 temp inputs, 2 axis Gforce, GPS sensor, I record RPM motor temp, Motor RPM, Battery voltage, Battery current, Battery temp, G force, GPS speed, RX voltage, at 10 times a second. I have plenty of memory after 4 heats I don't think I have ever used over 60%.

To answer your question, each time you plug the battery into the unit (through the unit to your ESC), you are creating a new file in the memory, but the old files are not erased unless you select it to overwrite it when the memory gets full (circular buffer), or if you manually reset it with your computer.

So, when you go out with your 3 or 4 boats, you can plug it it into the first, take a log of the run, unplug it and then plug it into the next boat, etc. Then when you are done with all 4, put it in your fieldbox and take it home with you to view all 3 or 4 boat's readings.

The only thing that I feel might be a bit of a pain with this is if you use the bushless RPM sensor, which monitors two leads of the motor, it can be a pain to disconnect it and connect it between all 4 boats.

All in all, this is a very powerful piece of hardware for a FE person.

I cut a deans connector in half and use it as a quick connect for my RPM sensor...All my boats have a deans quick connect. That way, you dont have to keep messing with the RPM sensor wire
