Seems the Unlimited Hydros (who turn left) have the rudder on both sides. I think that having the rudder on the inside would make it more likely to leave the water if the boat lifts the inside sponson.

with this adapter it is about 2" from transom
Please reply, need to order parts soon!

The rudder blade should not be closer to the transom than the struts. The rudder blade should be a as far from the transom as the props or slightly farther back. For one thing you don't want to disturb the water that the props will eventually see. The other issue is leverage.
ps make sure the rudder swing clears the prop diameters!
On my cybersorm I have the rudder in the center and it works just fine for running fast and strait. My 2 records in Q mono and Offshore are with this boat. Now for oval racing I don't think its better in the middle. I would prefer it offset to the right for that. Now having said that I did set this boat up for my girlfriend with a mild motor so that she could turn it in both directions. Thats why I put the rudder in the middle and a turn fin on both sides. I took a shot with this boat running it at the saw events set up like it is and was very happy with the results.
On all my early builds i used a center rudder cuz i thought it looked better.......turns out, they work great........turns are very good both ways. My first were BL Villains and then a 45" Dumas..........the Villains turn on a Dime! I think it works just fine......................
Blue Villain was before the pearl blue paintjob.....
...With most monos the placement to the right works fine for turning either direction, I know my Aeromarine Titan 40 turns very well in both directions, but its rudder is long enough to stay in the water during a left turn..
Jay, do recommend offsetting the rudder to the right in an offshore mono then (as long as you use a longer blade)?
I am planning on building a P Offshore (DF29) for the Limited class and was wondering. Good question Darin.
Because the boat turns better to the right with an offset rudder, and because you have a lot more right turns on an offshore course than left turns, a right-mounted rudder works fine. You will have to put a turn fin on the left corner of the transom - most put a smaller fin there than on the right but do what works on your hull. I've watched plenty of gas monos run the offshore courses with a right side rudder and win...
