Sorry if this comes off as a dumb question... If I run a brushless motor that says a max current with 45a with a 60a esc does that mean that the esc will burn out the motor? Again, I'm just trying to understand the basics of my boat... Can I get away with a 60a esc or should I use a 45 or 30a esc to run the boat?

The amp rating on a motor is what it is happy with, but be assured that you can pull a lot more.
The esc does not push power but merely let it through from the pack to the motor.
If the motor is demanding more than the esc is rated for then the esc will get hot, it may thermal or it may fry.
The pack has a C rating and if the motor demands more than what the pack is happy to send then the pack gets hot and may show its unhappiness by puffing.
This may not be the most technical answer but I hope it is of some use to you.
If you think your motor may pull up around 45A then the 60A esc will be fine.See it....find the photos.....sketch it it....build it........with wood -
"If I run a brushless motor that says a max current with 45a with a 60a esc does that mean that the esc will burn out the motor?"
No. It means the ESC has the capacity to provide amperage the motor needs. However, if you overprop the motor, you could easily be over the 60a continuous rating and burn it out. Do not use a smaller ESC, it will fry for sure.NEED PARALLEL CONNECTORS?? QUALITY 5.5MM, 8MM, 8 AND 10 AWG, GET THEM HERE:http://forums.offshoreelectrics.com/...est!&highlight=

So the 60a esc should work fine with that motor? And when you mean overprop the motor, thats basically setting it up so that the motor will demand more power and burn out? And using a smaller esc would be if I used a 30a esc? ThanksComment

One more thing I forgot to mention is that if the motor is not appropriate for your hull size and prop, all bets are off too.
I could throw a 450 heli outrunner in my big rigger and all kinds of smoke would quickly appear.
The 6XL from the big rigger would sink the min cat !
What have you got so far?
Hull?
Motor ?
Battery pack(s) ?
ESC ?
Props ?See it....find the photos.....sketch it it....build it........with woodComment

Motor is a 3700 motor with several ESC, 30a, 60a, and 80a, just a standard proboat prop from the 26 shockwave (not brushless) so ill need a new prop, suggestions would be welcome. The hull is just a plain d vee hull, not sure what it is, I picked up a bunch of parts and such at a yardsale relatively cheap... the parts are mostly brand new still in wrap. Battery backs I have several from nimh 7.2v with different amp ratings all the way up to 11.1v lipo (which I was planing on running with the escs and motor, all of the esc are for brushless motors)Comment

What is a 3700 motor? Is that the KV......brand code................etc. What is the size.......36-56....28-48 etc..................and the kv.NEED PARALLEL CONNECTORS?? QUALITY 5.5MM, 8MM, 8 AND 10 AWG, GET THEM HERE:http://forums.offshoreelectrics.com/...est!&highlight=

the rpm/v is 3600 bl is 2845.. no idea what the brand is the motor is just in a bag. Max current is 45a
Thanks for the help everyone, its much appreciated, sorry if I'm not really knowledgeable yet, I'm trying to get my bearings in thisComment

Ahhhh..........the ol' "bag motor". 3600kv is too high for 3s in my opinion........2s or 7 cell nimh seems like a good place to start. Seems like it may be ok for a 24" hull.

Ok, then I'll try it with some 2s... Any recommendations for a better motor for a 24inch hull? And yeah unfortunatly it was the only thing not really still with the packaging so for now I'm just hoping itll work out ok to tinker with.. we'll see.Comment

You could throw this in it for just a little $$............on 3s that boat would scoot.
