Thats cos in england we get pounded by high tax. Take for instance today the government said VAT is going up from %17.5 to %20.0 that means everything i buy is going up but my wages are the same!!!! I often wonder why i live here, the weather is crap and we get taxed up to the hilt. Just my rant!!!!
P.S. dont get me started on the price of fuel over here.
I was looking at getting the proboat miss geico, and it works out cheaper for me to buy it from the states and have it shipped over than to buy it from horizon hobby in the Uk. -

Who knows. i pay national insurance which is taken directly from my pay and can be almost £1000 some months, then we pay VAT (value added tax) on all things i buy, also massive tax on fuel and alchohol, luckily i dont smoke because thats heavily taxed also, then you have council tax so the bin men can take our bins away and other things. road tax and that just depends on the type of car you drive, its down to emmisions but generaly big engine means big tax. Sounds bad but we do have the NHS and although it gets a slating from a lot of people i know i will get medical care at no cost, i can also get free medical care when im on holiday in europe with an NHS card. I love it in the states though. I have an uncle who lives in virginia and its beutiful there. Ive often thought about moving but not much call for heating engineers.Comment

It varies greatly from person to person, if you are on a low income and spend most of it on the essentials of life you will pay very little tax as you pay no income tax on the first £7450 you earn and food, printed media and domestic fuel eg gas and electricity are VAT free, But if you earn a lot drive a fast car or SUV that guzzles petrol. have paid off your house and blow all your income on luxury items rather than saving or investing any you will pay a lot, circa 50% income tax over £100,000 and 20% VAT on the luxury goods you buy and 90% on Petrol then I would guess that you end up paying near 70% total tax in the most extreme case, I as I believe the vast majority of the country does, fall in between the two, I don't have an accountant and have never taken the time to go through all my bank statements for a year to work it out as I believe I am paying a fair price for the privilege of living on this sceptred isle enjoying the services that I do. I would guess that I personally pay somewhere around 35-40% tax.
edit, the post above appeared while I was typing mine. Holy crap £1000 monthly NI, I want your job, I'm a printer on a reasonable salary although a little under the national average and pay £161. There's a prime example of why we cant just give a figure, James is a much higher earner than me and contributes 6 times as much towards the national insurance he will also be paying more income tax than me and more road tax/fuel duty for his (van?) than I pay for my econobox but assuming his location WM is West Midlands I may be paying as much or more council tax with the higher property prices of West Sussex despite the likelihood of James's higher income giving him a bigger house.Last edited by NativePaul; 06-23-2010, 10:43 AM.Paul Upton-Taylor, Greased Weasel Racing.Comment

Sorry i got that wrong some months my total stoppages are almost £1000, thats everything from pension to N.I my pension is only around £140 a month though, just depends because may wages vary due to bonus payments for amount of calls covered and stuff.
P.S do you work for the government saying that you think you pay a fair amount in tax! i dont know anyone that thinks any ammount of tax is fair let alone half of your fuel bill in tax.
that said i am very proud to be english i just think us who work hard get a raw deal in this country!!!
Oh and yes i get taxed just to take my van home, if i want to use it for private use i get slammed in tax so dont bother as me and the mrs have a car we share i just use it on occasion. On the plus side of that if i do use it for private use the company pay for all my fuel.Comment

No I don't work for the government, I work for Sony printing the pictures on CDs and DVDs, while for sure some countries have it better, (my sister is off to kuwait for a year and over there they make so much off the oil companies that there is no income tax at all) considering our situation and what we get for our money I do think our tax is fair, I don't live on the bread line despite all the tax I pay and quite frankly I would be prepared to pay a little more in order to reduce the budget defect quicker, I don't want my children to be paying it off, and I really don't want to be in America's position where the national debt has been increasing year on year almost every year since 1938 and its only a matter of time before someone calls in the debt and either breaks or buys the country.Paul Upton-Taylor, Greased Weasel Racing.Comment
