    Hydro hardware question.

So I noticed that newer setups have the rudder on the left side. What is the advantage of left over right?

i think its just a matter of what hardware they are using..you want the rudder on right to stay away from the water the prop is pushing that way..makes it kind of hard to steer to the right..

That makes snence. I had just been studying setups and notice a good number of them on the left. I thought there may be some new setup advantage. Thanks man

our rudders are on the left on our LSH's . ... they turn great for us... there has to be an advantage to one side or the other but i have no clue what it is....

In theory, having the rudder on the left helps to load the inside sponson in a turn, planing it for better handling. In practice, fast oval boats have them on either side. I have hydros set up both ways and can't say one is much better than the other. Even full-scale hydros put them on both sides.

Well then swaping sides on a package set up to the right won't be worth it if it's an involved process. Thank you Sir :).

I have 3 hydros, 2 have the rudders on the right, one on the left, they all corner and handle great.

I have had it both ways on my 1/10th scale boats and they both cornered just fine.

I have always wondered how much a left side rudder counters the prop torque on cat and hydro hulls. Boats want to turn a little right in the straights with wide open throttle from the prop torque. The rudder is on the left side providing some drag, turns the boat left. The faster the boat travels the higher the rudder drag force.

How much does it actually counter the prop torque to hold the boats line in the straights?

Has anyone used different length rudders (left offset) or more offset to help hold a boats line?

I have always tuned it out with the transmitter trim adjustment, but then it will turn a little left at slower speeds.

I was also wondering what factors determin what turn fin to use. I have noticed 3 diffrent types. The long slimline skeg, the wider linger blade & the blade with the turnned in botton edge. I havent bought one yet becaues of this.

                        Hey SJFE,
I have a H&M Lifter and the rudder is on the left of prop. I noticed on hard, smaller turns it tends to cause a little hop and slight cavitation but thats playing around on sharp turns. On normal turns it seems to bite and haul butt. Just a little insight.:D
