I have just got the hobby king NTN-600 into the water and it seems to be leaning quite badly to one side, also it doesnt seem to be that quick. Im not sure what angle i should have the strut at as when its level the boat seems to sit low in the water so the nose is getting wet. Can anyone give me some advise on how to get this boat running nice, im running it on 3s 5000mAh lipos and ive changed the esc to a 60amp seaking.

Leaning to one side

I am not personally fmiliar with this hull but can give you some suggestions. You can place the battery slightly to the high side of the boat to get it to sit level. Perhaps the battery is placed too far forward also, try moving it as far back as you can.
On most stepped boats the strut should be parallel to the keel - set the boat on a flat surface and adjust the strut to be parallel to the surface. But this can vary with the speed of the boat, it may run better with the prop end of the strut elevated 1-2 degrees above the keel line. Good luck and keep us posted.
I don't know what hop-up props are available or safe for this boat.

Ok will try that. I cant move the battery back anymore because its right on top of the motor anyway but will try moving it to the one side.Comment

Cool boat. If you can, and are ok doing it, I would move the esc to the front of the motor and run 3S2P (one 3S pack on each side of the motor). OR you could always just add a few ounces of weight here and there to see if you can find a sweet spot.Comment

Im really frustrated with ths boat now, just tryed running it again and it just wants to barrell roll, its so bad that i had the battery in one side so when the boat was static in the water it was leaning to the one side really bad but when i pull the throttle it leans just as bad over to the other side. i fear i have spent $299 on a pile of crap. it cant be a wheight issue its almost like the tourqe steer from the prop is pulling the boat to one side. if i leave it at full throttle it just spinsround after a few seconds. And no way will Hk takeit back becuase ive put an external water pickup on it.Comment

This is puzzling. I don't know the boat but it 'should' not perform that way if it's totally stock. What have you changed besides the pickup? Can you post a few photos of the side and transom of your boat for us? Sounds like the prop is too big.......

That water pickup is deep. Is the prop sharp? If all of your wishes are granted, many of your dreams will be destroyed!Comment

A simple thing to try would be to put a trim tab on the right side. Thin aluminum, just bent at a 90 degree angle, put it on with good two sided tape. That way you can try it without drilling any holes. I have done this before, also lets you try different sizea and closer or further away from the keel.
What is the COG on the boat as far as distance from the transom?
Is rudder straight up and down or is it slightly angled?
How stiff is the rudder linkage to the servo?
I am assuming it floats with the port side low, but runs with the port side high?

It seem that the water pickup is too low, and it create drag, no wonder it lean to one side. Try adj it, or remove it first and use the original water pickup and see how it goes. Hope it helpStiletto tunnel,EPV135 (53") twin cat, CT06"Spirit of Qatar", FD 47" mono, Twin Mini Cat 23.5"Comment

It was still the same before i put an external water pickup on. ive just given up on this boat now. I dont relly know what im doing when it comes to boats. I just wanted a plug in and play for a bit of fun, seems there is no such thing in rc boating.Comment

Try a single short run with the pickup just barely clearing the hull and without the turnfins (just tape the holes). Turnfins are a bit deep and not really the correct angle. The boat has some potential...

I would suggest you go a buy a "brand name" boat like a SuperVee 27, or maybe a UL1. Those boats you can pretty much put the batteries in and run them and only grease the shaft now and then. There are others of course, but I personally have had good luck with those.
The boat you bought, along with most of them from Hobby City have great "potential', but usually require a fair amount of "tinkering" to get them working right. Not good if you just want to "Play" with no hassles.Comment

You guys have made me feel a little better. i dont mind doing a bit of tinkering and im a gas boiler engineer by trade so im not completely useless. That vid explains exactly what my boat is doing but maybe a little worse. i just dont want to cock it up like i did with my blackjack 26 brushless, i tryed changing the hardware on that and it just wouldnt run right after.
Should have paid the extra and got the osprey boat!Last edited by jamespl; 07-01-2010, 11:40 AM.Comment

James, there are those who love to "tinker" with a boat until it is "right" and there are those who just want to drop the darn thing in the water and play.

Aquacraft boats are pretty well setup out the box. I owned both of them. With that said I'm sure you can get yours figured out with some tuning. The onw thing to remember is a boat is like a see-saw.
