hopping in the turns

whats the best way to keep a mono from skipping/hopping while making hard turns at speed? my df 26 is hopping and the prop is leaving the water while turning sharp..the boat really leans into the turns ..i would not think this boat would need turn fins but i could be wrong...its going real good in straight shots though..gpsed at 50 so far with 4/1/2 minute run times and cool temps

One way is to delift the prop.

Be carefull running it with the hop. You can easily blow a speed controller doing that. Just ask Egneg.

10-4 guys thanks for the input..i'll try a small set of fins and work with the strut a little more...the spikes in current must be brutal on esc's with the loading and unloading,,my first instinct was to give it more juice to get through the turn but i almost turned it into the yellow sub..not such a great idea i guess

I think I know how I blew the himodel 200 amp speedo in my df 33" with a 1521 1y now... was hoping on the right hand turns... went good to the left.... took out the esc.... no smoke... just quit.... was during a hoping right turn

Virtually all vee hulls require a turn fin for good turning at speed, period. The hopping is very indicative of lack of lateral resistance in the turn.

Why use a small fin? Get a large one and just raise it out of the water until the boat hops again, then lower it a bit until the hopping stops. While you're at it get two, one for each side.

with respect of what you're saying and your knowledge Jay, my 29" mono (DF copy) doesn't have any fin and does not hop in turns, I have experimented (I may not be the only one) to have the rudder not vertical, I'm assuming that when the rudder is vertical, when the boat turns to the right, the rudder creates some lift because it banks, having the rudder axis tilted counterclockwise (when looking from the back), in turns the rudder blade is then a bit more square to the water surface and acts like a fin, originaly I wanted to have the rudder squared to the right side of the V... I did not push that far yet!

I just got some nice medium size turn fins for my 33" delta force... I know all my monos have at least one.... where Should I mount them? is there any rule of thumb where they should be located?

The default position for transom-mounted turn fins is as far out towards the chines as practical. Normally they are mounted at right angles to the bottom of the hull. These two features will keep the fins mostly out of the water when the boat is running straight (for minimal drag) but give maximum grip on the water in a turn when the vee hull leans over. Many fins are on pivots so you can easily adjust the depth of the fin in the water, a great tuning aid.

Twisting the rudder will help - in one turning direction. With a normal rudder angle, the rudder becomes a lifting surface and this is one of the things that causes the hopping. All I can say is that if a DF turns well without a fin you are either not moving very fast or the turns are pretty wide.

i only got the hopping action on hard fast turns...long swooping turns were no problem..maybe most people put turn fins on monos as common knowledge i just wanted to mention it because you read so much about the great handling of these boats..also i wanted to avoid drilling more into the hull if i did not have too...if fluid and dsmock tells me to add turn fins the you are damn straight i am going to..

i put on the small set of fins from ose and it cured most of my hopping...i really need to find some fins that are slightly longer...it did improve the handling a lot though
