    Schulze Repair Prasie= Mega 40.160WK

    Guys,

Just wanted to share a good experience. If you followed my thread on the issues I had with my 40.160 in my Conquest cat you are aware that I fried the leads on all the caps. So I sent the controller back to Schulze for repair and in about a month I recived a repaired and improved 40.160. Schulze doubled the number of caps on the board from 5 to 9! So now I have a MEGA 40.160WK.

No need to run an external cap bank anymore (that's what caused the initial problems)

Just wanted to give some kudos to Schulze who repaired my esc at a very reasoable rate (approx $90 including shipping back) and beefed it up.

    The original esc:

and the new and improved one:

I also invested a big chunk of money into replacing all of my castle connectors with Schulze's connectors. Money well spent!

It looks like there are two different size caps now. Are they all the same value?

What happened that lead to the HV Etti external Cap bank causing the failure?

I am interested because I am about to place an order for the 35V version of the Rubycon RX30 caps that Etti uses on that cap bank and I want to make sure that I don't cause any harm when I make my own cap bank with them.

In case you are wondering how I knew you used the HV Etti cap bank, it was because I overheard you talking about the problems you were having with that Schulze at the LA SAWs in March. I was the guy sitting between your canopy and Tony's.

            Thanks,
            Brad

              Hey Brad,
the new Schulze's have a built in soft start circuit which slowly charges the onboard caps. When I connected the 10S battery to the esc no problem, but when I plugged the Etti caps into the energized system the onboard caps tried to instantly charge the Etti caps. The inrush current was too high and vaporized the leads to the onboard caps. If I would have charged the etti caps up to the battery voltage it would have not been a problem. Or if I would have plugged the etti caps in before I hooked the battery up and then used an external soft start to bring everything up to an equal voltage it would have been fine. Nothing wrong using extra caps but you must be much more careful when using higher voltage systems.

With the extra caps onboard now, no need to use the Etti bank. I do however use a 35 volt bank on my hydra 240 LV's. I also now use a soft start resistor to bring the voltages close before making the final battey connection.

              Hopefully that is clear.

Thanks for the clarification Tyler, it does make sense.
I need to make up some of the capacitor charging connectors. They are not as necessary for my lower volt setups that I run but they will make my bullets last longer.

                Have a good weekend.

I just use three 1k resistors in parallel soldered together with alligator clips on either end.
                  works like a charm.

Well im very happy for you mate.
Always good to hear a good end to a story.

Would you be so kind as to forward the address or contact info for schultz.
I have 2 that have been damaged via water when the cat flipped at 140 kph the other day.
Just wanna send them back to see if there fixable, better trying than throwing i guess.

                    Cheers Ryan

Thanks for the tip. Seems easy enough.

                          Thx Ryan,

Check the link above, address is on the left.

Can't wait to run her again with a little more safety margin over the HV110.
