    Lost flex drive

I am using a straight coupler with set screws on a 6mm KB45 motor and .150 flex cable. The shaft got loose and I lost it and a prop to the bottom of the lake. Has anyone ever used a very small plastic zip tie on the flex shaft between the motor and tube as a safety catch? What do you suggest?

i had the same thing happen with my fieago. my coupler didn't make it in time so i bought a nylon bushing that was about a inch long and made it look just like that type of coupler it held for three minutes then i lost my shaft. i know run a small piece of fuel tubing in the space you speek of. i think it is better than a ziptie because it's balanced and the rubber will hold better

SJFE, I am afraid I will round/wear out those little set screws. I take the shaft out after each outing.

skidoo, have you tested it yet? That might also help as a water/oil barrier? I use a piece of hose between the drive dog and strut as a water seal.

To be honnest Reddy I am considering going back to a 36mm motor. I think I like the stats of the smaller motors. Less amps.

I didnt get to run it long enough to make up my mind. I got a 100 amp controller for the KB45 and needed atleast a 120.

I am wanting a Neu motor next. Mastercard might get me one for Christmas. lol

The kind people who's area's I service will prolly buy mine come Xmass..lol. I really think my issue is alinement. Im just not willing to mod the mount any further. I can get what I want from a 540 size motor. I will have a Hydra here soon.

Ned Schmidt was telling about a set up that he did, which involved a groove and set screw in the prop shaft. there was no contact on them, but if the shaft tried to slide back (say a broke cable) it would hit the screw and save the shaft and prop from falling off.

I can't figure what you are describing. Can you draw a picture?

I tried to draw a pic it looked ridiculous, my understanding is you drill and tap the strut for the set screw (at some location), it lines up over the groove/channel that you notch in the prop shaft, you counter sink it slightly so its inside the channel but not rubbing on the shaft. if the shaft moves in or out more than the width of the channel it hits the counter screw. hope that helps, I have never seen one.

There may some kind of low drag collet you could put in front of the strut that would do the same thing. I never have had this problem before (knock on wood) but now Im venturing into the darkside!!
