SV question that may assist all

A question was raised in the SV 27 forum that may be of interest to all and certaintly us Newbies who dont have millions of bits to plug and play. Maybe the experts can assist.

When is it the motor or esc?

I currently have a similar problem, Not many of us have spare motors and esc's lying around to check. How do you tell is the motor has gone? I puffed an 180A esc when the shrinkwrap shrunk a bit and the motor wires touched. Swapped it with an Etti 150 HV esc and the 8xl arming was very quiet and the motor turned a couple of times when the trigger is pulled and thats it. Changed to the 9XL and alls good until it too died yesterday as I was bringing it in after a 5 minute run and before the LVC acticated.

In my case im running a second hand 9xl with an Etti 150 hv on 4 s. and 6s. No smoke, batteries ok, std SV prop and prop wash pickup. The motor was hotter than I would like but not to the extent that it should die and become demagnatised.

With fresh batteries the motor dosent arm (that I can hear) but the prop turns a couple of times when the the trigger is pulled and thats it. Could the Speed Controller have become reprogramed when the LVC or BEC became low? or is it the motor thats been running too hot and died? I would have thought that the 150 with cap board should be more than enough and that wasnt even warm.

Are there any guidelines other than swapping parts?
    Cheers

It is possible to measure motor coil although it is not easy and requires knowledge and equipement, personnally I have some very cheap 80A Mystery ESC that I carry to the pond, I plan to buy a cheap small motor to test ESC's when the doubt is present!
I have never been in a situation where I could not say it is the motor or it is the ESC, the only time I have had issue was when the ESC went so I swap it with one of the cheap Mystery and tested the motor, hopefully it was ok!
I believe everyone can afford $30 in a cheap motor/ESC, I did pay $10 for the Mystery...

a 9xl on 6s wont have a long life, especially if your running up to 5 minutes

        Chears Ozzie crawl, I agree.
It was quick enough on 4s, hadnt tried it on 6s yet. The boat is a good sport boat on 4s, allbeit a bit light. I wanted to build a boat that would go the distance without worrying about motors, esc's or batteries without thrashing or pushing to the edge of the equipment.

Is there a link as to what each motor is designed for spec wise?
        Cheers

around a 1000 watts,if cooled properly, but in saying that they can get to hot if ran to long with to much load, what works well for a 5 lap race maybe to much for 4-5 minutes of run time

I was trying to diagnose motor vs. ESC on a boat that had a *brushed* motor, and the answer I got was that for *brushed* motors you can hook the battery directly to the motor (bypass the ESC)--this worked. Brushless is a different story...
