    Spark!

I too am having the large spark with my setups... I am running 10s setups in my df sniper and another 40" df clone and a 44" aeromarine cat... is it ok to have the large spark? I am using a schulze 40-160 in the sniper and a hv240 in the df clone, and a Turnigy monster 2000 in my cat... all have BIG sparks.. thought this was normal... I need a "reducing spark for dummies" class if this is a problem as all my setups are running costly esc's I don't want to smoke.......

It is normal so you can either deal with it or put a resistor on one lead (preferably the neg.). There are some threads on this with detailed explanation and layout of the wiring. The biggest problem is that it may start damaging your connectors.

I recently posted a similar question, MAPPO sent me this reference:

      http://mgm-compro.com/pdf/en-antispark-d230808.pdf

I'm gonna try just building a bridge wire to pre-charge the capacitors vs. wiring in a permanant one.

      Here's a similar thread:

Just got some 1/2V 33ohm ressitors from the Shack. 5 of them for .99. Should work find but will know soon.

          Jeff:
Methinks you mean, a 1/2w (1/2 watt) 33ohm resistors . (not trying to pick on you...just wanted to clear up a sorce of confusion)

Can anyone please... I mean pretty please take a picture of the tool they are using for this spark problem... I am a see person... and I'm a little slow...lol and still need it just about spelled out for me...

Here is the one I made, it has 2 - 1/2 watt 220 ohm resisters in parallel.

Egneg, does this stay in the system while running or just to (prime) the caps? Also, why is no one making and selling these. I know I would invest in a couple. Especially if (like yours) you just plug it in and unplug it, and then plug in your main lead. You would really only need one no matter how many models you have. I am just lazy and not sure where to get the parts.

You are correct I just use it long enough to charge the caps, but I can't take credit for the idea as Nautiboyz is the the one who did it first to the best of my knowledge. It is easy to make, a couple of connectors, resister(s), solder, and shrink rap and that is all there is to it.

I would defffffff buy some too!!! I'm with you boatman.... I think there is a market for these:) so who's making me some that I can buy? I have a hakko 936 but my soldering still leaves alot to be desired... Lol!

One last question about this is will it hold and work for all voltage? Ex: hydra 120 on 4S and also on hydra 240HV on 12S?

I just made a few. 14 ga wire with resistor between and alligator clips on each end and shrink wrapped. You just stick it on to both ends of connectors before you get ready to tape up and then pull it off and hook the last ESC wire up.

I actually do plan to make some and put them on my site. Figure about $3 would be good. I prefer the clip and no connctors...just more to pull apart.

Here's some newb advice to reduce sparking...

My first connection order when hooking my two 2s1p lipos to my hydra esc was:
                          1) lipo 1 red to esc red
                          2) lipo 2 black to esc black
                          3) (gasp!) lipo1 black to lipo2 black

                          Result: massive spark.

                          The next time I tried
                          1) lipo1 black to lipo2 red
                          2) lipo2 black to esc black
                          3) lipo1 red to esc red

Result: big spark, but not as bad as before

                          Third time I tried
                          1) lipo1 black to lipo2 red
                          2) lipo1 red to esc red
                          3) lipo2 black to esc black

This resulted in the smallest spark

I think the 3rd ordering puts the most resistance in the circuit before the final wire is connected since the capacitors are "ahead" of the last connection.

With the 2nd ordering, the capacitors are "behind" the final connection and pull a lot of current quickly before they charge up.

Anyway, with the 3rd ordering the spark is so small I don't feel like I need a spark arrestor...
