Yes, Sony Vegas is one of the best I know out there and I like it myself.
It may not be the easiest for you as beginner editor that would like to just do simple tasks.
As much as I love Sony product I will suggest for you to try Pinnacle Video Studio:
I am using this software for years now and I like it. My kids are using it all the time to beef up their YouTube videos. It is a very simple software where you can find yourself easily and do all the basics in no time. Very user friendly interface and all you need to do is few clicks before the movie will be pro-ready to upload to YouTube in whatever format you like. It won’t change original quality at all if you like and it will if you need to.
Get it and I will be more than happy to help you with it to get proper results….

Here is a HD video loaded onto the Vimeo Server as recommended in this thread. It was taken with an onboard 1080P HD camera at 30 fps. There is NO upconverting, etc. The file is 165 MB and took 1 hr and 20 minutes for Vimeo to load it. It took another hour for them to process in into their video HD server. You can click on the HD icon on the right of the Vimeo video window to select the HD format.
I am running a new, powerful Sony laptop with W-7 on a high speed internet connection and the results are ??????. I feel the picture quality is good but the high data rate of HD and trying to achieve the recorded 30 fps frame rate leaves something to be desired.
I would appreciate your comments, speciafically was the increase in quality with HD really worth it? How did the playback respond on your computer? Thanks, Joe

Increase of quality worth it??? O yeahhh....
I love HD. File is large and time of upload and processing too but this is the pain of todays HD....
I am recording all my videos in 720P. It is still HD high quality but file size is smaller.
May I ask what is the original file format of your HD video before uploaded to the internet?
I love this video....

Thanks for the encouragement. The capture data rate is 15 Mbit/sec and the audio is 48kHz with AAC audio compression. The video compression is advanced H.264 saved as an MP4 file. I am using 16 GB cards for recording.
Uniquely the RF microwave transmitted video as seen on my 52" Sony LCD is almost as good as what you are seeing on the Vimeo site. I'm now using 1.2 Ghz as my transmit frequency since 2.4 Ghz gets too many data hits from wirless LAN interference. I will be switching to 5.8 GHZ but there will be a significant reduction in range and more break ups due to the much higher LOS requirements at the higher transmission frequencies.
Next step is to transmit this via SKYPE. More to follow...............JoeComment

Yes Vimeo seems to hold the quality a tad better IMHO. I also use Sony Vegas Platinum. Like stated above not the easiest to use but nice software. When I purchsed this There was a few of them that could take .mt2 files and burn to Blu-Ray. I convert my video file to MP4. Definatly not as good but still holds decent quality and video files are much smaller. If all of your wishes are granted, many of your dreams will be destroyed!Comment

Steve, first let me say, i detest google/youtube.
One thing i can attest to however is some newer cameras and video recorders have one press youtube buttons made specificaly for youtube, not all have them but some do, with a single push the camera or recorder will go into hi res and crop to youtube standards, you dont do anything but upload, my brothers wife has one and i will admit the HD movies look fine in the youtube HD section.Comment

Thanks for all the tips. I have a bit older version of Pinnacle Studios(1-2 years old) on my desk I can load and check on upgrading.

H.264 is great compression.
Did you try 720P yet?
For you tube that is what I do and works fine. Smaller size file and still WOWW quality.
