    Cheap waterproofing that works!

I thought this was pretty cool for us.

Moderators...please kill the other one I sent in for approval. I figured this one was not a risk to show. I am going to try this myself on radios and ESCs. What the heck...might as well.

I thought the Mambas already had the conformal coating on them

        Jeff,

Diegoboy has been conformal coating for himself and me, everything from ESC's to receivers. He found a compound that works great. Perhaps drop him a line and ask him what he uses.

I've run boats with both the ESC and the receiver completely submerged and still running without glitching courtesy of Diegoboy. In fact, I can say I haven't lost anything that he has coated for me.

Jim, this is actually what CC uses on the hydras, I use it as well... never failed me.
I apply it a bit on the extra thick side and from all angles to be sure that it sits on the board and it's elements.

Interesting video. Too bad it appears the author does not understand waterproofing Vs coating techniques. Slopping a speedo with a bunch of goo doesnt make it any better at resisting water intrusion then a clear uniform coating does.

While it might appear that adding large amounts of adhesive material makes for a better insulator from the conductive effects of water nothing could be further from the truth.

i have used the same stuff as in the video, you need to put it on thick so it actually covers
wont cover trying to add a thin coating

I disagree. Since conductivity is the issue you only need to apply the correct amount to insulate the effects. If you dont understand how much is required its easy to assume that large amounts suffice. Thats not the case. Water is actually a better insulator then a conductor in its pure state. Add salinity the equation changes. But to make claims of adding a thick coating of material Vs an even coating is not supported by production techniques used by many technologies in the use of waterproofing electronics.

john i know what your saying, i myself have tried a few different conformal coatings till i found a very thin viscosity one.
but your not looking at what i wrote,i didnt say a thick layer was needed for insulation sake its the product it self that requires a thick coating to cover properly

Well never the less...it friggin runs under water!! I use ettis so they do a good job of coating anyway. I have seen the BS about splash proof but this exceeds anything I have seen.

If anyone dares to do what he did with an expensive ESC then be my guest and video it.

Comparing thermal conductivity of different materials………..
Silver has one of the highest thermal coefficients at 429 but copper is a close second at 400, (and a lot less expensive). Aluminum is 250 and Brass is 109. Since conductive heat transfer is directly proportional to the thermal coefficient, use of copper rather than aluminum for a heat sink would provide a 38% improvement.

Well, I guess I guessed right when I bought this same MG coating at my local electronics store. Good to know!
And likewise I have never lost any of my coated ESCs, even a mystery ESC submerged for 10 minutes when I flipped my Mini V.
