H&M No Step 1 Owners? Need Your Input!

I'm wondering what setup all of you H&M No Step 1 owners are running. I've tried many different setups, but haven't been able to achieve much over 32-34 mph. I'm not really a mono guy, but I suspect my issue lies in RPM and prop choices.

Please post your setup including the following elements:

    1. Motor - including KV rating
    2. ESC
    3. Battery Setup (IE: Nimh 12 cells, Lipo 4s1p, Lipo 2s2p, etc.)
    4. Hardware Setup - including manufacturer, depth of strut, turn fins or not, trim tabs or not as well as trim tab angles used or measurements related to trim tab surface area.
    5. **Prop Choices and Speeds Achieved** - list multiple if you can

Any and all input is welcome. If you don't have all this information, please provide what you can.

    Thanks, I really appreciate it!!!

      What's your setup?

The No-Steps are tricky to figure out, but once you do they are solid performing boats.

I've raced an OM 26 and currently a Delta Force 25 with a Hacker 5L, and also a 1512 1D. Props in the X438 range. 2S2P. Not sure of the current speed of my DF, but it races very well.

A UL1 motor and an X640 on 4S1P would also be a good setup.

I've tried many setups, but the latest is as follows:

        Lehner Basic XL 5000kv
        2s2p Flightpower 25c @ 5000mah each
Various props tested in the 35 to 36mm range. Best result with X432 at 34mph with tweaking.

        A previous setup was 4s1p Turnigy 540size 2300kv motor.

I know these hulls handle the high speeds great, mainly because I mistakenly put 14.4V Nimh into a Feigao 7s, on X632 if I remember correct, and it flew until one of the cells gave way.

Perhaps I'll put the Turnigy 2300kv motor back in, go back to 4s1p and go for a larger prop. I have the following props available measuring 37 to 42mm: X437/3, V937/3, L38x55, M440, X640, 215, X442, X642, 42x55. I'm sure some of the local guys have others to try. I keep the inventory of the smaller ones for our group.

What would be the max pitch you would recommend for a mono such as this? I know the V937/3 and L38x55 are probably out.

I'm pretty sure I have the No Step 1...
          It's shorter than a SV27 by 3 or 4 inches. I've run it in N1 and N2 a couple seasons ago.

In N2 it was decent fast, but too small compared to other N2's. I can't tell you much about the motor because it's an unlabeled red Chinese motor that Brian Buaas gave me...6L is etched on the endbell.

I ran a Barracuda 80 with no cooling and a 435 prop and things were getting hot in heat races...burned up 2 Barr.80's...but I was also running Nimh's and it was still competitively fast. Then I tried it in N1...never got rid of the glitching no matter what I tried. Now it sits on the shelf with sport boat plans for it's future.

Still, the hull was fast, stable, and controllable for it's size. Plus I think it is one of the best looking monos around.

Hardware was Fuller's. Small turn fin. Everything pretty much neutral...all my monos run nearly neutral, but that one definitely has the strut parallel to the ride pad. I'll double check when I can, but I don't remember any adjustments. It did run a little wet with the Nimh's, but I blew the ESC's before I could correct for it or get Lipos. Nimh's were 6cell saddle packs BTW.

UL-1 w/ 4S is probably not a controllable option in the NoStep 1 (but I think in terms of heat racing with other boats). It's a really small hull. I think that would work well in a NoStep 2 though.

I agree, but stable is an understatement. With the balance right, mine was super stable, even at higher speeds.

My bad...I know you said NS1, but I was visualizing the NS2.

Now that my mind is clear, I ran against a NS1 4 years ago in N-2 mono. At the time, I was using a BBY OM 21 with the Lehner Basic 4200 and an X435. Sorry-I don't know what the guy was running in the NS-1, but the NS hulls run wet by design. They take quite a bit of power to get going compared to a traditional V hulled mono, and he never really got it running correctly. Fast, but darted all over the place.

              Stick w/the 32-35 mm props on that size of boat. X432, X632, X435, X435/3.

With your XL5000 setup and an X432, is the boat running wet? Do you know your amp draw? Mid-30's in that size of a hull isn't too bad.

I'm not planning on racing this hull in any of these classes. I am going to enter into P-Mono and P-Spec-Mono so that the local guys have enough boats for the race. I figure if they all end up on their lid, I'll cruise to the finish!!!

To answer your questions, yes it still runs wet and no I don't know what my amp draw is, but with that Lehner, I'm guessing it's fairly high. I'm guessing 110 amps, but that's merely conjecture. I haven't timed the run and the recharge of the batts.

When I made my mistake with 14.4V to 5070kv, it ran mid to high 40's and the hull was very stable. I'd like to overdo the equipment so that I could run in the 40's if at all possible. It's a little embarrassing that my micro hydro at 16" is considerably faster than this thing.

                In the smaller prop sizes, I have the following: X427, X430, 1930, Y531 plastic, 31.5mm plastic, Propshop3214, Tenshock32x36, X432, X632, X435, Y535, Y535 detongued, M435/3, V935/3, Grim36x55 and a TFL435 that measures 34.5mm.

                Prop choice ideas?
