Building heat stinger

HI ALL,

ONTO MY NEXT ISSUE WITH FE BOATS..I AM GETTING MY DF CLONE 39 READY FOR ITS MAIDEN RUN BUT I AM HAVING AN ISSUE WITH MY FLEX CABLE SETUP..ITS A 1/4 INCH FLEX WITH A STINGER OUTDRIVE AND STUFFING LINER...WHEN I THROTTLE UP HEAT BUILDS EXCESSIVELY UNDERNEATH THE STINGER DRIVE..I HAVE A FRICTION/WEAR PROBLEM ON THE CABLE WHERE THE COPPER BUSHING ENDS INSIDE THE DRIVE..IT ALMOST LOOKS BURNED ON THE END OF THE BUSHING..I HAVE GREASE IN THERE AND IT TURNS FAIRLY SMOOTH..MY LINER IS NOT PUSHING INTO THE DRIVE AT ALL..WOULD CUTTING THE BUSHING SHORTER CAUSE PROBLEMS? Heat is a sign of too tight of a fit and/or not enough lubrication. Grease alone probably won't provide enough lubrication for the bushing & prop shaft bearing surface. Try a little oil there.

Is it vibrating? Does the stuffing tube go into the strut at all?

Not much of any vibration...the stuffing tube does not go into the strut but the liner does just a bit...does a little heat build up normally? I have never noticed..the heat is going all the way up my flex into the coupler area..somethings wron and i cannot figure it out..part of my problem i beleive is the use of a 1/4 inch cable which is not as flexable as a 3/16..so my alignment has to be better...

How much bend do you have in your stuffing tube? Take a bunch of pictures and post it. We might be able to spot something that you might oversee.

Is it a brass bushing or leadteflon? The best lubricant for teflon is water and running it dry will burn out the bearing in just a couple of seconds even at partial throttle.

Its a brass bushing in the speedmaster stinger..i do not have a bearing on the end of the drive..i put some oil in which helped some but my angle on my stuffing tube must be too much for this large cable

1/4" cables are difficult to keep cool in high rpm FE setups. Been there plenty of times. One of the best ways to keep the heat down is to keep the cable from whipping in the stuffing tube. Shorter cable lengths can use one large radius bend but longer cables can utilize and s bend. Cable grease is fine for lower rpm gas hulls using 1/4" but FE users tend to swipe out the grease much faster. And oiler can resupply the stuffing tube with lubrication while in use. Oh and dump the teflon and just use brass tubing.

Try some mobil 1 synthetic motor oil on it....straight 30 weight.

Funny you mentioned that jeff i put some 85-90 mobil synthetic gear oil and it helped a little..there is definately no heat while running in the cold water now...i was getting it while bench testing..thanks for all your help
