    JAE 12 fe

I have been out of boats for the past couple of years flying planes, but would like to build another couple of boats, one in particular is a smaller rigger, I like the blizzards, It was the last boat I built but I never got to finishing it.

I am thinking of building the JAE 12g as an electric boat using one of my outrunner ducted fan motors, has anyone had any luck or tried this boat yet?

I'm doing one now but it is going slow not sure what I'm going to use will do that when I see how much room there is lol I have seen some pics of one and it did look nice.

My 4s packs come in at a little over 1 1/4", I am not to worried though as I expext it will need some sort of a cowl to fit the motor proper anyway. I am unsure about a motor, I am going to have to do a little research on that one, but I would like to use a high kv outrunner. I am going to start with 5000mahs at 30c so I should be able to use 150 amps to start with, then I will work my way down to something reasonable and lite.

That's a pretty small boat. Outrunners sometimes have problems in confined spaces by snagging nearby wires, etc. Too, cooling is a challenge and they tend to run hot. They are hardly miracle motors - just very much the fad right now. If you want 4S then it is hard to beat a UL-1 motor/ESC.

ive ran 540s against edf outrunners in jets and they cannot touch them, the 540 size motors like the ul-1 and feigao's are great but the design is old, there are alot of nice outrunner motors out there that I hope will fit the bill.

but then again I have been out of boats for a while so who knows.

Jets and boats - tightly enclosed spaces with little air volume versus huge airflow - far different power requirements - not much similarity there. Enough experienced boaters have used outrunners to know their limitations - great for sport use, not so great for most high power applications. They are a large fad today, it will be interesting to see how they fair two years from now. And outrunners are hardly a 'new design'.....I saw my first one in a SAW boat in 2004.

I'm all for trying "new" things, and what works works, regardless of its reputation in other applications. Good luck and keep us posted.

I know they are different but as far as power requirments go they are closer than you think, but then you run into limitations from space and airflow.

as far as outrunners go, they have come a very long way since 2004 even, newer edf outrunner motors are becoming more reliable and have higher effiency ratings, not to mention there is the ability to water cool then without having to add any more outside dimension to them.

last it is going to be for sport use, a couple of mph does not matter to me. But I figure I have everything for it so what the hell? If I do go this route I will probably make a cowl that keeps the motor exposed out of the top, or run a venuri inlet on it.

Try the out runner I want to know. Some of the guys running 1/8 scale are using them becouse they have more torque and can swing a bigger prop or same prop with more cup or pitch. That adds up to more speed.
Just my 2 cents but I'm old

anyone have an idea of how many watts it would take to get this boat running good, I know its more than that but I just want a starting spot, someone mentioned that the ul-1 setup would work, if thats is true then can someone give me the general amps/watts specs on a stock 4s setup, the rest of the specs I can get else where
